Horus Heresy – Mechanicum Ursarax Cohort

Among the new sets for the Mechanicum are the Usarax Cohorts, a unit closely related to the already available Thallax Cohorts.

Both, the Thallax and Ursarax are no robots, but heavily augmented cyborgs. Where the Tech-thralls or Servitors are mind-wiped, these keep a part of their human independent initiative and personality, but are stripped to the bare minimum of their major organs and nervous system and then encased within an armoured mechanical system.

The Ursarax are a rarer sight on the battle field, compared to the more common Thallax, as they fulfill a different role in combat. Where the Thallax have their different types of ranged weapons, the Ursarax are focused on close combat and assault attacks. They are equipped with jump packs and lightning claws, which can be replaced with power fists, and are even armed with short ranged Volkite Incinerator in the middle of their chests.

The Ursarax Cohort is a set of six miniatures and will be launched on April 12th 2025 for 62,50 EUR. Pre-Order starts today.

The kit is spread across three sprues. The leg sprue which is included once is shared with the Thallax, and the upper body sprue, which covers parts for three models each, is included twice. The parts are casted with sharp details, yet you have some minor mould lines. Some pieces are quite delicate, so take your time removing / cleaning those.

Beside the three sprues, you'll find a gray-scale instruction leaflet and the infantry decal sheet with black and white insignia for the Mechanicum, as well as six 40mm round bases. We will build a set of three Ursarax for this review.

This step is identical for building Ursarax or Thallax cohorts. You can build six different poses in various walking motion. The hip and ankles are connected by small tongue-and-groove pieces, which could be filed down for further flexibility. You could mix and match the pre-sorted pairs, but would probably need some filling on the bases, like rocks or fallen enemies to counter the different lengths of the (stretched) legs.

The upper bodies of the Ursarax have a lot of different pieces and include the jump packs directly on their backs as part of their armour. As they had to recreate the design of the resin parts, they had to cut these into a lot of bits, but they did it in a very convincing way and captured the plasticity of the sculpt in a properly. As these are robot suits, they look identical so far.

The next step are the arms, you can build four pairs with lightning claws and two pairs with power fists. For our load out we went with two pairs of claws and one pair of fists. The left and right arms can be mixed to create different poses / pairs, along with individual fingers/claws to create further variations. This creates a lot of dynamic poses for the Ursarax.

And in the last step we add a lot of final details, the shoulder pads, further vents and the heads. Unlike the Thallax the Ursarax have the same head design for everybody.

Some scale comparisons with the other walkers / infantry units from the Mechanicum, along with their little brothers from Legions Imperialis.

The poses are really menancing and I could imagine putting some of these on small / low flying stands to show them use their jump packs.

Conclusion

They did a great job moving these from resin into plastic. A bit more variety and clearly more dynamic than the Thallax. The weapon options and poseable / different options for claws and fingers is really nice, as well as the six different leg poses for the Cohort.

Like I wrote in the old review, in the way they split the sprues, they could easily make Thallax and Ursarax based upon the same leg sprue, and could be open to add a new third variant / pattern, maybe some elite body guard for a magus or some kind of command unit.

While the kit is pretty well designed and complete, the price is a bit harsh as you pay more than 10 EUR per miniature with the RRP of 62,50 EUR for the box of 6. Especially as that is not that much cheaper than their Forge World price of 90 GBP for a unit of 9.

Warhammer 40,000 and The Horus Heresy are brands by Games Workshop.
