Limes fortlet and watch tower Pohl

Last weekend, we took a short trip to the Taunus mountains in glorious weather to visit Pohl and the Limeskastell. This is a replica of a Roman wooden fort with a watchtower, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for 20 years.

Here, the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes (ORL) around 100 AD is recreated on the border with the Germanic tribal areas. The site was built in 2011 according to the latest research and is located near the site of a small fort.

The fort is open during the main season (March to October) from Friday to Sunday, usually from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Please check before your visit to see if there are any special closing days or other events taking place there. Admission is €5 for adults/young people and €2.50 for children aged 7 to 14. Younger children are admitted free of charge.

Parking is available directly at the fort, which is located on the B260 between Nassau and Naststätten. We encountered a colourful mix of visitors, and the taverna, which offers reasonably priced drinks and food (including hot meals and cakes), makes it a great place to stop off as part of a day trip.

The fort is designed as an open-air museum depicting Roman life both indoors and outdoors.

The individual rooms contain installations and exhibits, and there is a group room where schoolchildren can learn about the history of the site. The other rooms include dormitories with cooking facilities, but these are also used as exhibition rooms to display various finds, illustrations and models.

In the inner courtyard, there is a covered area that can be used for a snack break. Behind it, in the basilica, is the special exhibition ‘Mainzer Römersteine’ (Roman stones of Mainz).

The battlement walk leads along the defensive wall, from where you can also reach the tower via a bridge.

The tower is also used as an exhibition space and houses a replica of the tower by Ancient Tracks. Evelien and Tobias, supported by Torsten, took on the project and built a 60 x 60 cm model of the watchtower using a combination of classic and modern model-making techniques. They used cut-to-size wood and Styrodur in combination with 3D-printed resin and filament. The concept was also based on archive material from the Limeskastell itself, including 3D scans.

You can view the construction report on their website, Limesturm in Miniatur, and on their social media profiles (IG - Ancient Tracks, Team Würfelkrieg).

Inside the tower, you can see the storage area and further information about the history of the Limes. But above all, enjoy the fantastic view over the Taunus mountains.

In the tavern, you will find further free information and a small souvenir shop where you can pick up mementos and ideas for further excursions into the world of the Romans.

Without a guided tour and with a short break, we spent about 1 hour there. The visit is ideal in combination with other excursion destinations/activities, as it will not fill a whole day on its own unless there is a special programme. Nearby there is a children's playground, but you can also visit Naststätten or Nassau, which are only a short drive away.
