Age of Sigmar Warcry – Stormcast Eternals Lord Aquilor

The Stormbringer subscription included some impressive characters for Age of Sigmar, such as the Stormcast Eternals Lord Aquilor, who was delivered with issue #23 of Stormbringer.

Lord Aquilor is a character from the second edition of Age of Sigmar, released in 2017. A similar pose of a Lord-Arcanum on a Gryph-charger was included in the Soul Wars starter set. Games Workshop describes the Lord Aquilor as follows:

Commanders of the Vanguard Auxiliary Chambers, the Lord-Aquilors are masters of the hunt, tracking their foes across the Mortal Realms as they ride the winds aetheric. When the foe is cornered, the Lord-Aquilor will strike with their starbound blade, channelling their hatred of the enemies of Order into every blow as their Gryph-charger savages the opponent with beak and claws.

This multi-part plastic kit contains the parts necessary to assemble a Lord-Aquilor, mounted on a Gryph-charger and armed with a starbound blade, shock handaxe and heavy boltstorm pistol. He comes with a choice of bare or helmeted head, and a selection of accessories – a rope, grapple and bed roll – that can be used to decorate the Gryph-charger’s saddle. A magical astral compass can be attached to the pommel of his saddle.

The kit has an RRP of 35 EUR, but you can pick it up for 10.99 EUR with a subscription. The kit is spread across two small sprues containing 32 individual parts, including an option for his head, and a 90x52 mm oval base.

The casting quality is what you would expect from Games Workshop: sharp details and tight packing on the sprue. In some cases, the Stormbringer sprues were slightly warped, but this had no impact on the quality of the parts or the assembly process.

We will start with the mount, the Gryph-Charger. It has twin tails and hooves on the rear legs.

Now, we will add the upper body and front legs. A lean griffin's head and clawed front legs complete the animal. Despite the miniature being divided in a complex manner, the fit is incredibly seamless and well executed. The only thing for painters to consider is that the legs are part of the mount and not an individual piece.

Further details and armour plates are added to the Gryph-charger.

Now we build the Lord Aquilor. Wearing strong armour and carrying a heavy boltstorm pistol, he is almost complete, with only a few final details to add.

Although he does not have weapon options directly from the sprue, it isn't too much hassle to convert him using some of the spares from other kits and give him a weapon with a bit more range. The Lord Aquilor can choose between two heads, one bare and one helmeted.

I haven't glued the rider onto the hip yet, so that I can keep him separate for painting purposes.

He is also in an impressive pose for a mid-sized mounted model that isn't riding a monster.

It's a very cool plastic model, offering a lot of detail.

Conclusion

An interesting sculpt with a lot of character. While 35 EUR isn't cheap, it's a good price for a mounted character compared to other heroic models in the Warhammer ranges. If you're looking for this model and have the chance to pick it up via Stormbringer, it's definitely worth it.

The fit and amount of detail are everything you would expect. What's missing? A few more options. The two different heads are a good start, but it would be better if he could carry a shield and have the heavy boltstorm pistol holstered. It would also be good to have a weapon or two, like a lance or spear, which would make sense on a mounted model. It's still not out of its league though, as you might have some spare parts from other kits and should be able to do this with moderate effort, as it is plastic.
