Star Wars Legion – Galactic Empire Scout Troopers

The Scout Troopers, along with the Stormtroopers, have been updated with hard plastic miniatures, which are available through the new SWQ12 Scout Trooper kit or the Galactic Empire Starter Set.

This set replaces the old SWL19 Scout Troopers kit, which also contained seven miniatures. The old kit was made from a plastic similar to 'restic', whereas the new kit is made from hard plastic in an injection mould on sprues. The new SWQ12 Scout Troopers have an RRP of USD 52.99 and still offer poses/options for the proton charge and a sniper rifle.

The new Scout Trooper poses are spread across two sprues and come with unit and upgrade cards, as well as 25 mm round bases. The cards come in four languages: English, German, Spanish and French, and you can view the cards on the Atomic Mass Games website. As with all Atomic Mass Games products, assembly instructions are available to download as a PDF from their website.

The seven-miniature unit is spread across two different sprues. The first sprue contains the parts for the Squad Leader and the two weapon upgrades: the Proton Charge and the DLT-19X Sniper Rifle. This is a change on the previous version of the unit, which had a DH-447 Sniper Rifle. The second sprue contains four different sculpts of regular Scout Troopers with EC-17 blasters.

Once again, I must emphasise how impressive the level of detail and casting quality is on these sprues. There are hardly any mould lines, and the detail is very crisp. For some parts, such as the helmets, the moulds use slide-in parts to create more detail than a standard two-part injection mould could achieve.

The Squad Leader comes with a base decoration and binoculars. Other than that, there are no options and he is built as seen.

The remaining parts from the sprue provide us with two weapon options. As with the Stormtroopers, both have the same body pose and only the weapons (and heads) are different. This is a slightly odd choice, given that you had the chance to reposition one of them for alternative base poses. Due to the rock on the base, it's clear that they're the same design. One has a proton charge and a bag, while the other has a DLT-19X sniper rifle, a variation of the DLT-19 heavy blaster.

The other sprue provides enough pieces to build four different Scout Trooper poses. These are all built as shown with no options or modular pieces. However, they create very dynamic poses.

As you can see, this is the whole unit that can be assembled from this box.

Compared to regular Stormtroopers, Scout Troopers are lightly armoured. Star Wars Legion miniatures are produced in 1:48 scale, which translates to about 35 mm true scale. The third picture shows the miniatures next to Games Workshop's 32 mm heroic-scale Space Marines.

These are all the poses included in the new Scout Trooper kit.

Conclusion

Once again, I am amazed by the high production quality of the new releases, and this is a well-made update for the Scout Troopers. For players, however, it doesn't make much difference as this set doesn't offer any new options or additional miniatures. While the new sculpts are sharper than the former models, the latter weren't poor quality to begin with.

Regarding the price, these cost 2 USD less than the Stormtroopers but contain one sprue and four miniatures fewer. Therefore, in terms of value for money, they are slightly worse than the other units.

The Scout Troopers are also available as a mounted unit, and I'll be covering them on 74-Z Imperial speeder bikes.
