Star Wars Legion – Galactic Empire Starter Set
Asmodee sent us two of the new Starter Sets for Star Wars Legion, one for the Galactic Empire and one for the Rebel Alliance. We will be unboxing of both and provide in-depths reviews of the individual kits.
These boxes contain the new hard plastic miniatures, as well as everything else you need to start playing Star Wars Legion: tokens, cards, dice and rulers. The only thing not included is the rulebook, which is available as a free digital download.
The SWQ02 Galactic Empire Starter Set has a RRP of 99,99 USD and contains 37 miniatures, providing you with a 600 points Recon-Level Army. The printed content of each Starter Set is multilingual and covers English, German, French and Spanish.
The Galactic Empire starter set contains the following:
- 37 Miniatures
- Commander Darth Vader
- Stormtrooper Unit X2 (11 troopers per unit)
- Scout Trooper Unit X2 (7 troopers per unit)
- 37x 27mm Round Bases
- 7 Unit Cards, 15 Upgrade Cards, 10 Command Cards, 24 Battle Cards (all in English, German, French and Spanish)
- 4 Red, 4 Black and 4 White Attack Dice
- 4 Red and 4 White Defense Dice
- Movement & Range Tools
As usual, the assembly instructions are available to download digitally. The recon level forces and introduction to your first games are covered in the same four languages as the printed materials.
This set includes a number of hard plastic sprues, providing you with one commander (Darth Vader) and four units (two 11-strong Stormtrooper units and two 7-strong Scout Trooper units). The casting quality is amazing, with minor mould lines and incredibly sharp detail on the miniatures themselves. Below, you will find pictures of the sprues. We have written individual reviews of each unit, just click the link above each set of sprues.
Darth Vader from SWQ103 Commander Darth Vader and General Veers.
Two sets of Stormtroopers from SWQ11 Stormtroopers.
Two sets of Scout Troopers from SWQ12 Scout Troopers.
Three large cardboard sheets containing tokens. These are identical in the Rebel Alliance and Galactic Empire starter sets, yet they have different production numbers in the print information in the upper corner.
There are four decks of cards (one for each of the four languages: English, German, French and Spanish) covering the 7 Unit Cards, 15 Upgrade Cards, 10 Command Cards and 24 Battle Cards that you need to command your army.
The starter set also includes various game accessories, such as movement and range tool sets and multiple sets of dice. These are the proper dice that you get in the dice packs, not some cheaper variant intended for a starter set.
We provided detailed information on the miniatures in their individual reviews, but I wanted to give you an idea of their scale. Star Wars Legion is manufactured in 1:48 scale, which translates to approximately 35 mm true scale. In this image, you can see Stormtroopers alongside several units from the starter sets, as well as 32 mm heroic-scale Space Marines.
Conclusion
These new starter sets offer incredible value for money at an RRP of 99.99 USD, and you can access further discounts via traders. The hard plastic miniatures alone have an RRP of about 230 USD, to which you must add the better part of 36 USD for the dice packs, the essential pack worth 30 USD, and the card packs. Add it all up and you reach a total value of more than 300 USD - all in one box for less than 100 USD! This is an impressive discount and a great way to get started. These sets are available for both the Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War era, which is great.
The production quality is impressive. The sprues are cast to a high standard, with hardly any mould lines and very sharp details. This is certainly on a par with the best UK plastic production, and the switch from restic to hard plastic further enhances the value and quality of the miniature range at reasonable prices.
Standard games of Star Wars Legion are around 1,000 points; with this set, you get 600 points, which provides the core of a platoon-sized game. This makes Star Wars Legion cheaper than most other sci-fi games, such as Warhammer 40k, where characters cost around twice as much and squad boxes at least the same. Depending on your army's development, even the 'older' Blizzard Force could provide a valuable addition to your collection, as the only duplicate you would have is Darth Vader, while adding Snowtroopers, Speeder Bikes and an AT-ST to your forces. We are still at the beginning of the new production cycle, with more units coming in the next few months. I am particularly excited about the Mud and Wet Weather Troopers.
