Warhammer 40,000 – 2nd Edition acryl token set
I gave you an overview on the contents of the starter set of Warhammer 40k's 2nd edition, and one of the things that were missing - or at least not really complete - were the tokens.
Yes, I could have gone to Yaktribe, download the Necromunda tokens and marker sheet, print those out, laminate them and have some flimsy markers made from thick paper or card board. But here are options! I came across this offer on eBay by shinn7776, for acryl tokens.
You can pick up smaller sets of 10 tokens of one kind for 2 GBP, or a complete set with 80 tokens for 15 GBP (excl. VAT). As we're heading for the Chaosbunker Classics, I ordered multiple sets to save on shipping. I ended up paying incl. shipping around 70 EURs for 3 sets.
It arrived after roughly a week and was surprised by multiple things. First of all, we were charged less postage than it actually costs and they shipped it IOSS, which meant no additional fees or charges. As eBay directly collected 10,70 EUR VAT, we didn't went through the trouble of another 7 EUR DHL fee (as well as charges on the shipping), thus ending up at less than 25 EUR per set, incl. shipping, which is absolutely fine.
Inside the tightly packed parcel where multiple stacks of tokens in brown wrapping paper. These were numbered. At first I wasn't sure if a set was one of each 1-2-3, but the three sets were marked each with their own number to show, which four stacks go together.
80 tokens is a lot, and each of them has a protective film on both sides, which you need to remove.
These are made from single colour acrylic plates. You can see these are properly manufactured with clean writing and iconography. To make these pop you rub a wax crayons across the details and clean the excess off. Just a heads up, this takes time for 80 tokens and some, like the flame tokens take up a lot of wax.
The contrast this method creates is good, especially at arms length you can properly read the details.
The size is spot on and that they curved the edges is a good design choice. While the 80 token to not represent the layout the starter set gave you, you still have the enough to play with. Otherwise you can pick up specific tokens, you might need more of individually. For example if you play Saim Hann Eldar or a Speeder Cult of Orks.
Just a heads up, removing the film on both sides from the tokens takes its time, as does painting them. Count in around 2 to 3 hrs to get the entire set done for peeling and painting them.
Conclusion
There are several options to get your hands on the tokens. Buying the originals 2nd hand for unreasonable prices on eBay. Hoping for an unpunched or complete set this way. Printing your own, either on paper or finding the fitting STL files. Or trying for third party options on eBay or etsy. I found these by shinn7776 very interesting and at less than 25 EUR per set incl. shipping reasonbly priced. Especially as the acryl tokens are more sturdy than the originals. Other offers that I found on etsy wanted more than 50 EURs for a set of 80 tokens, or charged 15 EUR for the STL files to print them, thus making this quite a deal. Yet, the organising tray seems like an interesting storage solution for these.
Getting them battle ready takes a bit of time. But I guess, that someone who has the need for these is willing to invest this. I assume you could try painting them with acrylic paints instead of wax, and / or seal them using UV resin.
Do you need these to play Warhammer 40k 2nd edition? The game handles differently than newer editions (or to be more precised, all of them beginning with the 3rd edition), as the 2nd edition had more interaction between the individual units, heroes and such, therefore creating the need to keep track on various effects and stati. If you are only a casual player, the paper tokens will be fine for you. As we intend to spend more time on this game and ruleset, as well as producing some more content around it, we went for the more durable acrylic tokens.
