Star Wars Legion – 3D Objective Tokens

Last year, we reviewed the new starter sets for Star Wars Legion and had our eye on two of the new terrain sets. I find one of these sets, the Star Wars Legion 3D Objective Tokens, especially interesting for skirmish games, and we want to take a look at them today.

The SWQ102 3D Objective Tokens are a plastic kit containing various objectives of different sizes, ranging from supply crates to shield generators, and have an RRP of 44.99 USD. While these are not essential, as you could use markers or tokens from the cardboard sheets, the games benefit from the immersion these create. Due to their varied designs, they fit different scenarios and can also be used with Shatterpoint. All ten objectives (four large and six small pieces) come with pre-sculpted bases which are flatter than regular miniature bases, adding to the above-mentioned immersion with the board.

The box has four language markers on the packaging, but these are irrelevant in this case as no printed gaming materials are included besides the 'Read this First' leaflet with brief instructions in English, French, German and Spanish.

Inside the medium-sized box, you will find a large bag containing the two sprues, a small bag containing a small flying stand, and the 'Read This First' leaflet. As usual, the assembly instructions are available as a digital download.

The two sprues, which cover all ten objectives, are used properly, with minimal wasted space, and the production quality is high, as there are hardly any mould lines and the detail is crisp.

We are going to build all of the objectives, and I will put their names beside them as far as I am able to identify them. Each objective is marked with a letter and a number. All parts marked with A are required to build one objective, all parts marked with B are required to build the next objective, and so on.

The first thing we are going to build is a deflector field generator. This one uses the flying stand to elevate the generator above the ground. Deflectors come in various sizes and shapes in the Star Wars universe, and this is a smaller version of the ISD-72X Deflector Shield Generator Dome.

The objectives vary in size. Among the smaller, more generic ones is this ammunition crate containing round shells or grenades.

I love the fact that they added a Camtono to this set. It's a big Easter egg from the films as it was a prop made from an ice cream maker for The Empire Strikes Back, and can be seen in the background in one of the Cloud City scenes being carried by a character named Willrow Hood. The Camtono reappeared in The Mandalorian as a security container, which provided more information about its purpose. It's great that they added it to this kit.

We had these in some of the other terrain sets, but just in bulk — a few supply crates. They're simple, versatile and generic.

The next objective is an AN PHC 18 Holonet Transceiver, as seen in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

I couldn't identify these at first, but they look like flares or special ammunition of some kind. It's a small box on a roughly 25 mm round base.

Then there is a pair of generic shield generators with the same basic design, one of which has a round cover on top. Both sit on 50 mm diameter bases and provide a good interaction point.

This Rhydonium Canister is best known from animated series such as The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, and is used to contain dangerous starship fuel. If you want to make it look like it's leaking or spilling, Rhydonium looks like liquid chrome, so a bit of silver paint with a glossy coat finish will work well.

The last one in this set is a command terminal. While assembling the terminal itself was straightforward, I had quite a lot of trouble making it fit the base, and I couldn't quite manage it. The elongated C-shaped part of the base that guides the terminal just wouldn't fit, so I had to file it down. Once this issue was resolved, however, it fit perfectly.

They work with various game systems: in the first picture, you can see them with Star Wars Legion scaled miniatures; in the second, with a Shatterpoint miniature; and in the third, with Warhammer 30k and 40k Space Marines.

Conclusion

The SWQ102 3D Objective Tokens are a well-produced kit, and it's clear that they did their research. They are not just various piles of supply crates, but items from the Star Wars extended universe, which I think is a big plus. While they might not be cheap at 44.99 USD, you can usually pick them up for less from your local gaming store, as I have seen them being sold for 32–35 EUR online. Beyond that, it depends on the comparison. Objective sets for other games, such as Warhammer 40k, cost around 40 EUR as well if they are not just coins or flat tokens; therefore, the price is comparable. Of course, if you have access to a 3D printer, there are cheaper options, but only if you print them yourself; offers on Etsy or eBay end up costing the same or more for ten objectives. Therefore, in terms of value for money, this set is competitive, especially if you can pick it up below retail price.

One box is enough for most scenarios as only certain cards require more than four large objectives. You can work around this by putting some of the smaller ones on larger bases or modifying what you need if you don't want to buy a second kit. The smaller tokens work well as assets or sabotage targets, such as bomb defusal or supply drops, and not just as static scenery.

As most of the designs are setting-agnostic or not obviously Star Wars, you can use them in generic sci-fi settings as well. Therefore, if you like them, you can use them for Warhammer 40k, Infinity or Stargrave too. While there are no customisation options in this kit, the variety of objectives more than makes up for that.

  • Production Quality: 4/5
  • Design appeal: 4/5
  • Options / Customization: 2/5
  • Value for money: 3/5
  • Ease of Assembly: 4/5
