Warhammer 40,000 – Leagues of Votann Army Set
Today is pre-order day for the army set of the latest addition of playable factions for Warhammer 40,000 - the Leagues of Votann. The Leagues of Votann are the successors of the old Squats in the new Grim Dark design. Less cartoony, less ZZ top biker gang, more sci-fi with a bit of nordic inspiration.
These army sets were introduced a while ago and cover a medium sized force of miniatures, around the size of the Combat Patrol sets, along with a limited edition cover variant of the Codex, tokens and data cards. All this is usually set at a RRP of 155 EUR. Compared to the Combat Patrols, of which the most are around 120 EUR, you pay the upgrade for the Codex (~40 EUR RRP).
In this case the content is:
- 25 new miniatures:
Ûthar the Destined / Kâhl
Einhyr Champion
three Hernkyn Pioneers,
20 Hearthkyn Warriors - Codex: Leagues of Votann
- 50 Leagues of Votann datacards
- 63 Grudge / Judgement tokens
- two Leagues of Votann transfer sheets
The Army set comes with a card board sleeve, underneath is a full cover artwork on both sides. The front scene reminds me a lot of Gates of Antares.
Once you open that boxed set, you are greeted by a pile of sprues. These are not tinted, regular grey sprues, as you'll find them in the later individual kits.
We will go into detail of the individual sets in the coming week with indepth reviews, see this more as an unboxing.
There are two character kits in this army set, the named charachter Ûthar the Destined (who can be built as a Leagues of Votann Khal) and an Einyhr Champion.
They come with a small sized sprue each. Something very positive is seen right away - they have options. A bit of monopose, yes, but we have variants for heads, weapons etc. and that is an improvement. I assume that these will be priced around 31,50 EUR (compared to Primaris characters). Giving us the first 63 EUR of vaue in this 155 EUR kit.
Next up the Hernkyn Pioneers. A mobile unit of three anti-grav bikes. This picks up the old Biker Gang theme of the Squats.
The Pioneers are a three sprue kit, comparable to the Primaris Outriders, so I assume these will be 50 EUR once they are released on their own. These do have variants / options as well, mostly weapons, but as written above, they will be covered in a review of their own. With that we're already 113 EUR of RRP value.
The main bulk of the boxed set are the Hearthkyn Warriors of the Leagues of Votann. There are twenty of them in this kit, so that should translate into two of the regular boxes.
They are split across 3 sprues per ten warriors, and cover a lot of weapon choices, along with a broad variety of heads and helmets. Each set has the option to build a Theyn (unit champion) along with special weapons. A regular unit of 10 of the latest releases are around the 50 EUR RRP mark, that would add another 100 EUR to the value of this kit, summing up to 213 EUR just in plastic.
As often seen with these boxes, we have a illustrated seperator to protect the other gaming accessories from the plastic. In this case, below you'll find the Codex Leagues of Votann, the data cards, the bases (3x 90mm oval, 2x 40mm round, 20x 28mm round), the combined instructions (covering all units, but in a more compact way), the token sheet and the decals.
The Codex and Datacards are 42,50 EUR and 24 EUR, adding another 66,50 EUR to the value of this kit. Which means in total you receive about 280 EUR RRP in this 160 EUR boxed set. Not bad, especially as the 155 EUR is "just" the RRP, and you will easily find it with about 10% of at your local gaming store, adding up to around a 50% discount on the individual contents.
You know this blog isn't about META discussion or something like that, so the indepth reviews will cover mostly the miniatures, the options covered in there along with comparisons to the original squat range (partially done by Games Workshop on their Warhammer Community page) and a flip through on the book and data cards. I am already excited on building these, as I think they have a lot of potential and some options haven't been covered in the previews, giving you the a different angle on this army.
