Age of Sigmar Stormbringer – Warcry Stormcast Warband

As mentioned in the last article, we're building a Stormcast Warcry warband from the Stormbringer Magazine content and we're already able to muster a small one with the first few issues (actually two, if you use the Kruleboyz as well).

With the content of issue #1 and #3, we have six miniatures and we're going to build Vindictors and the Knight Arcanum. The instructions are included in the booklets, all models are push-fit (but I'd recommend using glue) and come with 40mm round bases.

We start with the Vindictors. The assembly instructions only cover fixed poses and don't show you all possibilities, like alternate poses, different heads and options.

If you don't have access to that document, there are multiple ressources you can check. For example there's a reddit /r/WarhammerIndustructions, and on there I found the full info on the Vindictors, showing me how to not build the banner bearer, how to build the second variant of the Vindictor prime etc., and that was just what I did.

I picked out the pieces that I needed and grouped them together per miniature. Cleaning them up and assembling them - with glue as I don't rely on just push-fit.

As usual, I didn't attach the shields. That would make painting them up much harder than it would need to be. In this case they have connectors that show, which shield belongs to which model. In other cases you could simply use a fine liner and mark them (like A-A, B-B etc. on model and shield).

The prime has a few different design choices. For example the helmet has a plume, the shield has a different design than the regular rank and file soldiers and the left shoulder pad does not just show the lightning, but a lions head. In addition the spear has a small banner attached to it.

As all bases have two pre-made slots, but these models only need one to be attached to the base, the other hole can be filled with small deco piece, that are part of the sprue as well.

There are quite a few spare bits left after assembling them. For example I didn't want to use any bare heads, so all of them are spares. And the regular spear of the prime, the spear of the second prime option as well as the banner are spares, along with all the opposite arms and the shield, that isn't used. There will be a second set of vindictors, using the same sprues, were we will build the alternate poses and most importantly the banner.

That's 710 points worth of Warcry Stormcasts.

Next up a character, we're going with the Knight Arcanum from issue one. She came along the Kruleboy Boss, but we're just focussing on her for the moment.

She is built upon a 40mm round base as well, and the base decoration fits the two slots that are pre-drilled. She doesn't have any options beside building her with or without her helmet on.

I went with full helmets, as I think it suits the re-forged character of the Stormcasts better. I want them to be less human, more eternal. A bit like the Thousand Sons in Warhammer 30k/40k, where you have them being trapped in empty armour, and here I think the soul of the individual Stormcast being held together by the armour fits the idea. In addition with the Knight Arcanum we another 205 points for the Warcry warband.

The issues of Stormbringer give you basic information on the painting, and I assume with the next issues that provide the first paints, we will get more into that. But there are of course a lot of ressources online, for example by Games Workshop directly. The have a tutorial on the generic Stormcast Eternals in gold and blue online, even covering the unit we built today.

Even though Age of Sigmar has been around since 2015, I am only familiar with the rudimentary frame of the new lore. I don't know details about the Stormhosts and different chambers, so that is something that I have to give a browse to get a better understanding of how they work or what they are - beyond Sigmar Space Marine, to transport the success of the 40k image into the updated world of Warhammer. In this new world, the Hammers of Sigmar, in bright gold are the Ultramarines of the Age of Sigmar.

But I don't want them to be golden, but something different. I fancied the idea of going for a 30k Blood Angels theme, as this would give me the option to tie in the gold, but have a different colour as a primary. And to transfer that colours onto the Stormcasts, I went online and found the Stormcast Eternal Paint Planner by Tabletop Teacher, and gave it a try.

I will have to prime the six models and apply the base colours and see if that creates something, that appeals to me. I think that the prime will get a black shoulder pad and golden helmet, similar to the low ranking officers with the Blood Angels. As for the Knight Arcanum, I am not set, if I want to go for a healer motive, like the Apothecari or magic the Librarian, using either white or blue as a contrast for that model.
