Mortal Gods – The other Hades Zealots

Having already shown the first three Zealots painted in the review of the Hades Zealots, the next three are now to follow. While the first group looks a little more civilized, the second group gives a rather tough impression, as if it wasn't the first time that they had already taken up arms.

As previously mentioned, I had to replace the axe on the Zealot with a dagger, as the gluing point and the axe handle were simply too small to reattach the original. However, this does not harm the mini itself for the time being, as the look is not changed too much.

The woodcutter had a nice pose, firmly placed on the ground, with the axe very much in the foreground. This gave me the opportunity to experiment a little with wood colors. To enhance the feeling of followers of the lord of the underworld, I thought that dead wood would work best for the weapons.

Accordingly, I painted the wooden handle in Karak Stone (GW) and drew fine lines, which were lightened twice with Bonewhite (Vallejo) before a final accent was added by adding white.

The hunched veteran also showed clear signs of use on the sword and shield, although I simply gave in to the urge to give the bronze a good patina - it's fun to paint corroding bronze.

If you own the models yourself, you should expect some problems with the casting, as you can see here with the warped head, for example. You can compensate for this by painting complete surfaces as gradually as possible. For example, I first painted the skin of the models completely before adding the dots for the eyes because I was afraid that ink could have run into the somewhat irregular recesses. Only then did I continue with the leather parts and finally with the clothing.

All in all, painting the minis was more fun than I initially thought. Although there are a few casting errors, the zealots are divided into fairly clear areas, which can be categorized as follows:

  • skin
  • all brown leather
  • clothing
  • wood
  • hair
  • metals

If you stick to this order, you shouldn't have any problems with the painting. So, the army of Hades is almost complete. A Hydra would still fit well, but I think I'll hold off on that for now and continue with the army of Zeus.
