Mortal Gods – Defenders of Plataiai
Now that the Thebans have been expanded for larger demo games as part of club presentations, it's the Plataians' turn today. These have now also reached their standard size of 300 points.
As before, the challenge was to design the two armies on an equal footing for demo games. While the Thebans had been given more of the same, I opted for a more defensive character for the Plataians due to their historical background.
The Plataians were enhanced with a hero and a few archers. The veteran archer was supposed to ensure that the Plataians could rather hold off, which underlined the overall concept.
If you place archers in an elevated position, they receive an additional attack. As long as the veteran remained nearby, they would also receive another attack die through him, bringing them to a total of five attack dice.
However, with the archers, one cough and gone they are. In the test games, the Plataians seemed to me to have a slight upper hand due to the range of their bows, so I'll probably replace a group of Peripoloi with Hoplites for the Thebans.
The second troop of slingers doesn't really seem to be any good with them and I'm thinking about swapping them in favor of another troop type. The Plataians, on the other hand, appear well-rounded in their formation and can react quite flexibly to the scenario and the formation with their mix of different troops. Here is their lineup:
- 65 Lochagos, heavy armor
- 5 Defender, gives you +1 defence, once per game
- 3 Owl of Athena, can negate the effect of an omen, once per game
- 45 Promachos, medium armor
- 40 Experienced Peripoloi
- 35 Peripoloi
- 40 Veteran Archer
- 32 Archers
- 32 Alingers
Total: 297 points
Strangely enough, despite having fewer troops (I only realized later that there was even one more card for three points), I managed to create a more flexible army. Overall, the army looks good in any scenario, which is why I like playing it so much.
