Star Wars Legion – Kashyyyk Wookiee Warriors

One of the kits included in the Rebel Alliance Starter Set was produced from hard plastic long before the new edition of Star Wars Legion was released. Now, we have the chance to review it and provide you with an overview of the SWQ18 Kashyyyk Wookiee Warriors (repacked from SWL83 with multilingual content).

This set of six Wookiees allows you to play different units and even armies. Due to the variety of options on the sprue, they can be used to represent either Rebel Alliance freedom fighters or Kashyyyk resistance fighters for the Galactic Republic, and you can also build a Wookiee chieftain. All of this is available at an RRP of 49.99 USD!

The Kashyyyk Wookiee Warriors box contains four sprues (2x SWL83-1 and 2x SWL83-2) and either two or four (plus one) unit cards, depending on whether you have the Starter Set or the 'old' boxed set, as well as upgrade cards. These cards can be viewed on the unit's product page on the Atomic Mass Games website and come in four languages: English, German, Spanish and French. There are also six 27 mm round bases.

As usual, the assembly instructions are available to download as a PDF from the website.

The SWL83 or SWQ18 boxes contain two sets of these sprues, with three Wookiee bodies and lots of pose options per set. The casting is good and clean, though not quite as crisp as the most recent Star Wars Legions releases.

The first pose (A) lets us build either a chieftain with a bowcaster, a Wookie warrior with a blaster and a blade, or a Wookie warrior with an X1 carbine or a bowcaster. For this one, I mixed the more feral-looking pose with the dual swords from the chieftain. As the long-haired head is not designed to be used with the holstered blades, I had to trim the braids on his neck slightly to make them fit.

The fit was OK, but cleaning up the mould lines along his fur was a bit tricky, though not impossible.

The B Wookie warrior has an attacking pose and can be built with various weapons. You can choose from two blades, an X1 carbine or a battle shield. It is important to let the glue on his feet bond properly, otherwise he will tilt forward. Attaching the head to the shoulders for a clean finish was a bit of an issue. Just be patient and it will work.

Pose C offers another strong sculpt. It is worthy of a chieftain, either with two blades or one blade in a 'come at me' gesture, with an X1 carbine or long gun and blades on his back.

Each Wookie Warrior has either a feral head with dreadlocks or braids, or a head with shorter hair, similar to Chewbacca's. Due to the vast variety of options, as you can see, we have a lot of spare bits afterwards.

Of the various alien species who fight alongside the Rebel Alliance, the Wookiees are probably among the tallest. Below, you will find a side-by-side comparison of the Star Wars Legion 1:48 scale miniatures (approximately 35 mm in true scale) from the starter sets. The final image shows a comparison with 32 mm heroic-scale Space Marines.

Conclusion

This is a highly convincing set. The casting quality was good. There were minor issues with the fit of the heads due to the organic shape, and with removing mould lines from the Wookiees' fur, but these were still reasonable. The space within the sprue was used properly. With so many options, you can create units that look very different, and the base poses are used to great effect with the weapons and different heads, providing a lot of variation. This underlines what I meant about the unused potential of the Rebel Commandos.

It really shows how clever design makes it possible to add niche elements like Wookiees to a platoon-sized game. While not cheap at 49.99 USD for six miniatures, it is certainly a reasonable price considering the amount of options.
