Star Wars Legion – Rebel Commandos
The second Rebel core unit in Star Wars Legion is the Rebel Commando, which, like the Rebel Trooper, has been upgraded to hard plastic. The SWQ16 Rebel Commandos come in a box of seven miniatures and are available as an individual kit or as part of the Rebel Alliance Starter Set.
The SWL21 Rebel Commandos have been replaced by the new SWQ16 set, with the fixed poses of the resin plastic replaced by a partially modular, multipart hard plastic kit. The unit size remains at seven miniatures and is available at an RRP of 52.99 USD. Upgrades include a proton charge and a sniper rifle.
The new Rebel Commando sculpts are spread across two sprues and are accompanied by unit and upgrade cards, as well as 27 mm round bases.
The cards come in four languages: English, German, Spanish and French. You can also view them on the Atomic Mass Games website. As you probably know, the assembly instructions are available to download as a PDF.
As mentioned above, the Rebel Commando unit is built from two different sprues. The first sprue contains the regular Commandos with A280 blaster rifles in various poses, as well as a squad leader. The second sprue contains the Proton Charge and the DH-447 Sniper Rifle, as well as 14 heads for the unit of seven, featuring Twi'leks, Humans, Duros and Mon Calamari. These are the same designs as in the regular trooper kit.
The squad leader comes with a small rock on his base, and all the commandos have the same neck sockets as the regular troopers, allowing you to build them with the optional heads of the different species.
Four regular commandos can be built in the same way. They have dynamic poses and round neck sockets for the different heads. All of them carry A280 blaster rifles.
From the pieces on the second sprue, you can make two very similar poses to create the saboteur and the sniper. These also have the modular head system.
Here is a complete set of Rebel Commandos, built using the available parts from the sprues.
The Commandos are essentially regular troopers wearing coats and carrying different backpacks. A side-by-side comparison of the Star Wars Legion miniatures is shown below; they are produced in 1:48 scale (approximately 35 mm in true scale). The final image shows a comparison with 32 mm heroic-scale Space Marines.
The full unit includes the leader, two weapon upgrades and four regular commandos.
Conclusion
As with the Scout Troopers, I have a problem with the fact that, for just 2 dollars less than the regular Troopers, you receive four miniatures or one less sprue of content. While I like the fact that they keep the head system modular across both Rebel units, it's not just the fact that these are the same heads they use with the troopers; it's also the rather boring-looking expressions. These are meant to be veterans. Give them battle scars, bionics or an eye patch to make them stand out. You could even add species that weren't included with the troopers.
While the poses themselves are quite nice as they are dynamic, I think this kit could have been improved with minor tweaks to provide a much better end product. As with the troopers, using third-party or 3D-printed heads would be a good solution. The assembly and fit were fine; there were no issues at all. The same goes for the casting quality: there are a good amount of sharp details, and there are hardly any mould lines.
