The SWQ01 Rebel Alliance Starter Set has a RRP of 99,99 USD and contains 36 miniatures, providing you with a 600 points Recon-Level Army. The printed content of each Starter Set is multilingual and covers English, German, French and Spanish.

These new starter sets contain the new hard plastic miniatures, as well as everything else you need to start playing Star Wars Legion: tokens, cards, dice and rulers. The only thing not included is the rulebook, which is available as a free digital download.

The starter sets cover the recon level forces from multiple hard plastic sprues. You get a commander (Luke Skywalker) and four units (two 11-strong Rebel Trooper units, a 7-strong Rebel Commando unit and 6-strong Wookiie Warriors unit). Across all of these new hard plastic miniatures, the casting quality iss superb, with close to no mould lines and very sharp detail on the miniatures.

Below we listed the pictures of the new sprues, along with links to the individual reviews for each unit.

You get three large cardboard sheets with punch-out tokens. These are identical in the Rebel Alliance and Galactic Empire starter sets, but they have different item numbers in the upper corner.

The four decks of cards (one for each of the four languages: English, German, French and Spanish) cover the same amount of cards as in the Galactic Empire set, with 7 Unit Cards, 15 Upgrade Cards, 10 Command Cards and 24 Battle Cards. Everything you need to field your Recon Level Force.

As this is a proper starter set, it includes various game accessories you need for gaming. Such as movement and range tool sets and multiple sets of dice (attack and defence dice). And I like to point out, that these are the same dice that you get in the dice packs, not a budget variant for a starter set. This is a huge plus in my opinion.

You'll find detailed information on the miniatures in their individual reviews. But to provide an idea on the 1:48 scale of Star Wars Legion, which translates to approximately 35 mm true scale, I wanted to include some comparison pictures. You can see several units from the starter sets, as well as 32 mm heroic-scale Space Marines.

Conclusion

My verdict is the same as with the Galactic Empire Starter Set. The new starter sets simply provide incredible value for money at an RRP of 99.99 USD, and that is measured before you receive further discounts via traders. All the miniatures in here already add up to more than 230 USD of value, and that is not counting in the about 100 USD for the dice packs, essential pack and cards. Add all this together, you end up at an individual value of more than 300 USD. That is an incredible discount proper way to get started. As mentioned, these starter sets are available with Galactic Empire vs. Rebel Alliance for the Galactic Civil War era and with Seperatist Alliance vs. Galactic Republic for the Clone Wars.

While I had the chance to build various plastic kits from Atomic Mass Games, I have the impression that these new moulds for Star Wars Legions have even improved further. The details are cast incredibly crisp and there were hardly any mould lines to clean up. This production quality is on eye to eye level plastic production on the Lead Belt. And moving the product range from restic to hard plastic is a good way to improve their value and quality, while keeping it at reasonable prices.

Regarding price points, with most Star Wars Legion's games being at 1,000 points and this set already setting you up with 600 points, you are off to a good start for the platoon sized game. This makes Star Wars Legion cheaper than most other sci-fi games of that size. Compared to the number one on the market, Warhammer 40k, the characters in Star Wars wars cost around half and squad boxes are usually cheaper. We have to keep an eye on the upcoming release cycle, as the novelties are spread across multiple factions and two eras, but the Rebel Alliance is off to a good start.

  • Production Quality: 4/5
  • Design appeal: 4/5
  • Options / Customization: 4/5
  • Value for money: 5/5
  • Ease of Assembly: 4/5

Star Wars Legion is a game by Atomic Mass Games and distributed by Asmodee.
