Star Wars Legion – Mandalorian Leaders

While you already get an option for two commanders with the Mandalorian Army Box for Star Wars Legion, there are additional characters to choose from. One set gives you a generic but customisable duo of Mandalorian Leader & Hunter, and the other SWQ82 Mandalorian Leaders sets you up with four different heroes known from the TV shows.

The latter is the one we're covering today, with Bo-Katan Kryze, Paz Vizsla, Axe Woves and the Armorer inside.

Atomic Mass Games describes the set with an RRP of 52.99 USD as follows:

Those who rise to leadership among the Mandalorian clans are fierce warriors who have proven their combat prowess in conflicts across the galaxy. When they fight alongside the warriors of their clan, they showcase the true power of the Mandalore. This expansion contains 4 finely detailed miniatures, enough for 2 Commanders and 2 Operatives, as well as cards to support gameplay.

With the exception of Bo-Katan Kryze, who was already introduced in The Clone Wars, all other characters are part of The Mandalorian series. Therefore these two series are the best entry point to catch up on general Mandalorian lore.

The Mandalorian Leaders box contains the following:

The Star Wars Legion sets are usually multilingual, so you receive the printed content in multiple language versions. In this case we get the unit, upgrade and command cards in four different languages. In addition to the four card decks, there is a small sheet with four tokens.

Instructions are not included physically, but you receive an insert with a link/QR code that points you to the download link of the digital file.

All four characters come on plastic sprues, with Bo-Katan and Paz Vizsla sharing a medium-sized sprue. These are injection-moulded hard-plastic kits, featuring all the parts (including options in some cases) you need to build the model itself. During the transition from restic to hard plastic, Atomic Mass Games has shown with this range that they understand this kind of production, as you get very crisp detail and hardly any mould lines.

The first two characters we are going to build are Bo-Katan Kryze and Paz Vizsla. Bo-Katan Kryze is a Mandalorian warrior and former commander of the Nite Owls, once Pre Vizsla's lieutenant within Death Watch. Sister to the pacifist Duchess Satine Kryze, Bo-Katan took a very different path, embracing Mandalorian militarism, serving briefly as Regent of Mandalore, and eventually claiming the title of Mand'alor by wielding the Darksaber. In 'The Mandalorian', she works to reclaim and reunify Mandalore, clashing and later allying with Din Djarin as their differing views on the Mandalorian 'Way' evolve.

Paz Vizsla is a hulking, heavily armoured Mandalorian and member of Din Djarin's covert on Nevarro, part of the Children of the Watch sect that adheres strictly to the ancient Creed. Wielding a jetpack-fed, Gatling-style M-55 medium repeating blaster with an attached flamethrower, he's a formidable close-quarters and heavy-weapons fighter fiercely loyal to his covert's traditions. He's also established as a relative of Tarre Vizsla and Pre Vizsla, tying him to a storied Mandalorian lineage. When they were young, both Paz and Bo-Katan were part of Death Watch, and their shared story is told in The Mandalorian TV series.

Both miniatures use the regular round bases.

Bo-Katan comes with a small decorative rock, giving her a more dynamic pose. Her sculpt offers a few options. As she is a more liberal Mandalorian who removes her helmet, she can be built either bare-faced or wearing a helmet, and you can choose between the Darksaber or a second blaster pistol. If you go for the dual-pistol option, both are Westar-35 blaster pistols.

As I wanted to keep the option to paint her as a generic or custom clan leader, I went without the Darksaber, as well as with the helmeted variant.

With Paz it is pretty straightforward. He is shown in a shooting-while-walking pose, carrying the M-55 medium repeating blaster. The fit is absolutely no issue with this sculpt, and he stands properly on his feet.

The next character, Axe Woves, is an active member of Bo-Katan Kryze's Nite Owls, known for his blunt, sceptical demeanour and practical approach to leadership. Initially doubtful of Din Djarin and distrustful of the more traditionalist Mandalorian factions, he temporarily leads the Nite Owls as mercenaries after they split from Bo-Katan, before rejoining her and becoming one of her most steadfast lieutenants. His arc reflects the broader tension between pragmatic and dogmatic strands of Mandalorian culture.

As a member of the Nite Owls and therefore following Bo-Katan's interpretation of the Way, he removes his helmet if needed. This option is covered in this sprue as well. You can build him bare-faced or with a helmet. He has no options for his weapons and has a small base decoration in the form of a rock.

Just like Bo-Katan, I went with the helmeted variant to stay flexible, so I can turn him into a generic Mandalorian leader at some point.

The fourth character in this set is The Armorer. She is included in the Mandalorian Army Box set as well, as she is the spiritual and technical leader of Din Djarin's covert, responsible for forging Mandalorian armour and interpreting the tenets of their Creed. As both blacksmith and matriarch-like figure, she guides her clan's adherence to the Way, oversees Din's Foundling bond with Grogu, and serves as a moral compass within the group. Her true identity and face remain hidden, in keeping with the strict Children of the Watch code she embodies.

She has a stoic pose, portraying her in the way she is shown in The Mandalorian series. The sculpt does not offer any options and shows her armed with a gravity hammer and magnetic tongs.

Just like the previous miniatures, the fit and casting of this model leave nothing to complain about.

Here are the four characters next to each other. In case you are not familiar with the scale of Star Wars Legion, it is produced in 1:48 scale, which translates to approximately 35 mm. In this case, as the proportions are realistic, it counts as 'true scale'.

The representation of the characters is fitting, as it is very close to how they are shown in the TV series.

Conclusion

It is not uncommon for Star Wars Legion boxed sets to have a larger group of heroes put together. We have seen this for example with the SWQ14 Heroes of the Rebellion or SWQ21 Heroes of the Clone Army, and as these four are all interconnected around Din Djarin, it is quite a fitting combination. Yes, it is a bit impractical that you end up with a double Armorer, since the army box makes a fitting starting point to combine with this set.

Regarding the price, 52.99 USD for four miniatures is not cheap, but considering that these are named characters, it is within a reasonable range. Production quality is, as mentioned above, top-notch.

While the Mandalorian force itself is quite flexible, as you can go for different clans, have them as a faction of their own or mercenaries of either side, these sculpts – even while depicting named characters – provide dynamic options for your own creations on the tabletop.
