Space Hulk – The Final Frontier
As I want to properly narrow the scope of this project, let me write this down as the Final Frontier of my Space Hulk project. I prepared an overview of all the Terminators that I'd need in one of the last articles.
We are going to need a total of 20 different Terminators to cover all the poses / options from all four campaigns (4th Edition Core Games - Heroes of the Imperium, Duty and Honour, Bringer of Sorrow and Return to Kalidus). The three mission files, which were iPad digital releases, brought rules for the plastic Terminator kits of the 2010s, meaning the multi-part plastic terminators (for more options than the Black Reach mono poses, especially introducing the Cyclone Missile Launcher), the Deathwing Command Squad and the Space Wolves Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour.
As mentioned, I'm going to recreate this completely with Imperial Fists. But you could easily recreate this in different flavours, as the Wolf Guard and Deathwing got their upgraded and upscaled kits as well. It would be quite easy to cover the 20 poses and weapon options in a fitting thematic matter with these.
Of the 20 poses these are done:
- 1x Terminator Sergeant with Power Sword and Storm Bolter
- 5x Terminators Storm Bolter + Powerfist
- 2x Terminators Storm Bolter + Chainfist
- 4x Terminators with special weapons Heavy Flamer, Cyclone, Assault Cannon and Plasma Cannon (using bits from the new Deathwing Upgrade)
- 1x Apothecarius in Terminator Armour (using bits from the "old" Deathwing Upgrade)
- 1x Terminator with Lightning Claws (using bits from the "old" Deathwing Upgrade, I build this guy before the Assault options were available)
- 1x Librarian in Terminator Armour
Thus we have still five poses to do and partially in Progress:
- 1x Thunder Hammer & Stormshield -> Covered by Darnath Lysander
- 1x Deathwing Champion with Halberd of Caliban -> Likely a Tech-Marine in Terminator Armour
- 1x Terminator with Storm Bolter + Frost axe -> Chaplain in Terminator Armour
- 1x Terminator Sergeant with Power Sword and Storm Bolter -> regular model but alt build, or something special for more Imperial Fists flavour.
- 1x Deathwing Banner bearer with storm bolter and power fist -> Maybe Ancient in Terminator Armour, or simply a small token to show the banner, as the banner itself will be quite present / too large for fighting in Space Hulks
I still want to use the regular tiles from the 2009 edition, therefore I am missing a few pieces from the 4th edition / 2014 release, limiting me in some of the missions. These are the additional pieces included in the newer release.
- 4 corridors
- 1 room (the damaged control room)
- 2 dead ends
- 2 boarding torpedoes
- 2 boarding torpedo ramps
- 1 turbo-lift
- 2 turbo-lift entrances
- 4 breach markers
- 1 turn counter
Anyhow, size is the same, and if I intend to go for some of the older missions from White Dwarf and such, I'll need additional tiles one way or the other. The Space Hulk Terminators didn't have bases, but rather stands, and thus could be placed much closer as models with regular round bases.
Foot print of the new models, on 40mm (and partially 50mm bases) won't be able to recreate these tight congas. But there is an option.
While I went a bigger base size with my Terminators in my retro 40k 2nd edition project, I might have to go a size down for this board game project. 25mm will only work with some of the poses, but the 32mm Sector Mechanicus and Necromunda bases will provide a consistent solution for most poses.
As mentioned above, I replace the Blood Angels with newer sculpts, in the Indomitus Pattern armour, these are partially Leviathan models, but that is barely noticeable.
Others are conversions, and more conversions are in the work, but will be covered in articles of their own. I still have some bits left from the Deathwing Assault boxed set, have managed to get some further pieces from bits shops, and will keep you posted on the remaining few missing poses.
