Mortal Gods – Army of Thebes

Who would have known? Originally I only wanted to paint a small group of Thebans for demo purposes, but after the “small” demo was so successful and a demo in full game size was also well received during my visit to the Rhein Main Tabletopclub e.V., I decided to bring both, the Thebans and the Plataians, to full size.

In fact, not much was missing from both armies, because I had already increased the size of both factions by another unit.

The former size of the army

The challenge was not only to make them visually fit into a theme, but also to make them fit into the game in such a way that they have their own character. In the case of the Thebans, a little more punch seemed like the right choice, so I added another troop of slingers, a veteran hoplite and a new model for the Lochagos. The original leader has moved into the role of a regular captain and, in the form of a Promachos, now represents the smaller of the two melee heroes.

Mortal Gods – More Games!

Originally, I had only written this article as a post on the hobby forum tabletopwelt.de, but Dennis thought it would be a good idea to show that we don't just write articles, but also actually play!

So please bear with me for the amateurish presentation, I will make the next summaries of the games a bit more interesting. My opponent was none other than Martin, whom I've known for over 20 years and our paths have crossed many times at the gaming table.

First game – Scenario „The Price“

I was once again a guest at the Rhein Main Tabletopclub e.V. in Nidderau and, as mentioned, played against Martin. He had so much fun with the extended demo last time that he bought the whole game in pieces and brought his recently painted Athenians to the table. Martin painted like a machine and I don't want to keep the snapshot of his Athenians from you, which he painted in less than a month:

Athenians…assemble!

Deth Wizards – 2: The first formula

Since Deth Wizards is more of a side project for me, despite the goal of playing at CONflict, I decided to try my hand at painting a bit smoother and not rush myself with the skeletons. Of course, they're not really special models, but what can I say, I like to paint and I like to take my time.

I also tend to forget how I painted some models, which is why I like to write myself “recipes”.

Footsore Miniatures – Mortal Gods Mythic Wild Centaurs

After we've already taken a closer look at the civilized centaurs, today we're taking a look at the wild version of the four-legged gentlemen. All models are intended for the Mortal Gods Mythic game and, like the civilized version, were modelled by Trish Carden.

WarCry – Gloomspite Gitz Part 5

If you started your Hachette subscription last year, you also received the Stabba Grot in the first delivery, which also happens to be the cheapest model in WarCry, at least if you play greenskins. As he just about fitted into my line-up and I kind of liked the model, he saw some paint soon.

WarCry – Gloomspite Gitz Part 4

It's been a while since I've painted Squigs, and since I got Zarbag's Gitz from Dennis' Hachette subscription, I had the opportunity to paint the new incarnation of red bouncy ones for the first time.

Play-wise, they make the most sense when there's a horder in the warband that can give them a movement bonus. Otherwise, Squigs play exactly as I expected, they are real glass cannons. They can make a difference in attack, but one cough is enough and they're off the table too.

Deth Wizards – 1: The Book

Givana carefully turned the pages of the book. Although the pages looked thin and tatty, they felt extremely sturdy, almost like leather. The words and pictures were written in a dark brown ink that was pleasing to the eye.

“Oh, thank you grandfather! A real book! I've always wanted one of these since you taught me how to read!”

Givana's grandfather smiled warmly.

“I thought you might like a book of your own instead of having to read the ones from the public library all the time in it's reading hall. But before we read it together, there are still a few things to learn,” Karl continued.

“As it is no ordinary book and its contents have to be read step by step. When I was your age and celebrated my own 14th birthday, I received this book from my grandfather, your great-great-grandfather Anselmus. Through him I learned that life is a great balance whose equilibrium must be maintained and honored.

We must be careful. Some will envy our knowledge, Givana. Others, those less knowledgeable and wise, may fear us. Treasure this book and its teachings. For the next four years it shall remain a secret to both of us.”

And with that, I welcome you to a new mini-project of mine. While our elderly circle of hobbyists were chatting and making plans for the upcoming CONflict presentation, the idea of presenting Deth Wizards from Snarling Badger Studios came up. The reason for this was simple - it was a project with a manageable timeframe until the event and pretty much every hobbyist has a model or two of undead stuff lying around at home.

Yes, I too have a small pile of shame at home, albeit smaller than most other hobbyists, and I'm taking this opportunity to paint some minis and tell a little story in the process. I've been meaning to do this with one of my Oathmark characters for a long time anyway - the master necromancer Givana!

But as the saying goes, “No master fell from the sky” and I guess that also applies to necromancers. At some point and somehow they must have started out, stuck their noses into books of forbidden knowledge, carried out their first experiments and experienced their first missteps and triumphs.

Blood Bowl – Averland Hawks Part 6

It is well known that the Hawks are made up of players from all parts of the Imperium and beyond. Hawke Forth originally came from the port city of Salzenmünd, the most important seaport in the Imperium. With a lot of Blood Bowl being played in Nordland in general, it was only a matter of time before Hawke's strong arm would eventually be noticed. His commitment to the local population was also a success - his initiative “Fans belong alongside” is committed to ensuring that even less wealthy fans can afford to attend a Blood Bowl match.

Blood Bowl – Averland Hawks Part 5

Gareth was tired of constantly running in a drive wheel on a Reik's passenger ship. It was a low-paying, monotonous job. Ironically, the constant running was the basis of his fitness for being a Blood Bowl player.

On a trip along the Averland, he met the rebuilding Hawks. Without further ado, Gareth “the Express” Bosch signed up with the Hawks and started a new life. “The rest is history”, as they say.

Blood Bowl – Averland Hawks Part 4

We continue with a small dedication for particularly active users in the course of the project, so let’s get straight to it:

Sir Thomas Dragonblade

As one of the oldest players of the Averland Hawks, Sir Thomas had already had a lot of life experience. In Zhufbar, under Captain Milluzson, he had discovered his passion for shipbuilding and later even ran a small shipyard in Averland. Unfortunately, the business literally went down the drain when his assistant Ms. Elfikova ran off with a large part of his profits. As it turned out, she had used the money to build a ship stadium for her own team, the Karond Kar Sharks!

Blood Bowl was the next logical step for Sir Thomas - the large sums paid out to players would get him back on his feet while he yearned to face Ms. Elfikova's team each season to exact revenge.
