Star Wars Legion – Outer Rim Battles Terrain Pack

As part of the coverage on the Adepticon Road Map, we received a large package from Asmodee containing various boxed sets from their Star Wars Legions, Shatterpoint and Marvel Crisis Protocol tabletop wargames series. We want to review these sets, box by box, starting with the Outer Rim Battle Terrain Pack from Star Wars Legion.

With our upcoming Outer Rim campaign, we are excited to cover this terrain pack. This set has an RRP of 59,99 USD and contains ruins, rubble and walls, along with two mouse droids - a critter is usually included in each of these sets as an easter egg.

Having seen the product pictures/front of the box prior to this review, I was surprised by the amount shown on the back — more on that below.

The surprises kept coming. While other boxes usually contain quite a lot of sprues, this set only comes with two, which made me wonder. This was especially the case when I saw the size of the individual pieces.

As with all Atomic Mass Games kits, the instructions are not included with the set itself, but must be downloaded from the company's website. You can find them under 'Assembly' on the AMG website, or download the PDF from there.

We have two sprues: one covering the entry and ruined corner, and the other contains the wall sections. In total, we get these:

  • 1 Ruined Complex
  • 1 Crate Pile
  • 1 Wrecked Cart
  • 2 Mouse Droids
  • 3 Straight Walls
  • 3 Curved Walls L
  • 3 Curved Walls R
  • 2 Towers

The casting quality is beyond reproach. There are minor mould lines and the parts are easily accessible. The sprue frame was slightly warped, but this did not transfer to the parts themselves.

Assembly is quite easy, as the ruined complex is just a corner with some debris. The trashed cart, along with a few single-cast pieces, don't even require assembly.

The walls were lower than I expected, but I'll give you an idea of their size with some scale shots. You can build three straight sections and two sets of three curved walls (one set facing left and one facing right), which provide quite a footprint.

There are two identical towers that connect to the walls and you have some flexibility as they fit several sections. I guess these are some type of beacon or sensor array, which provide interesting focal points for your scenarios.

This set provides a good amount of terrain for marking out an area or building an encampment of some sort. In combination with some of the other buildings, you could build a compound for your Remnants or Rebels.

The walls provide cover for about half the size of the models. This certainly does not provide full cover, but it does offer some benefit. Due to their size, however, they can be used not only for Star Wars Legion, but also for Shatterpoint and other sci-fi games in the 25–35 mm scale.

Conclusion

The Shatterpoint terrain sets offer great value for money. I just had different expectations for this set. Firstly, I thought it would just contain the items visible at the front, such as the large corner ruin, and perhaps a few more walls. However, receiving more walls in a smaller size did not disappoint me, it simply required me to adjust my expectations. In terms of value, this feels fair, and the recommended retail price (RRP) of 60 USD will certainly be met with discounts from independent stores. For example, the Take Cover terrain pack for Shatterpoint is currently available online for between 44 and 78 euros. I expect that this set will be available for around mid-40 EUR.

In terms of quality: The pieces fit well together. There is no issue with assembly; just make sure you put something under the wall sections when gluing them to avoid glue dripping (or the walls sticking to your cutting mat). It will be interesting to see if we see any more Outer Rim buildings towards the end of the year or in the next supplement cycle.
