Deth Wizards – The Stitcher’s Warband Pt 2

Let us pick up where we left of the last time - with the Stitcher's Warband. It has a name now and the majority of the base colours has been applied.

I need to do some touch ups and details. And as this blog functions as a notepad for my projects as well, this is what I used for Kemmler. You can see the pictures further below.

  • Clothing - Citadel Night Lords Blue
  • Hat - AP Alien Purple
  • Dark Metal - AP Death Metal
  • Hair - P3 Bastion Grey
  • Skin - Vallejo MC 70815 Basic Skintone

And a late addition to this warband is Malaubert de Roncier by Wolfbane Art. That model is an undead homage to the Chavelier Ermite de Malmont, a rare Games Day miniature that was produced exclusively for the French Games Day in 1997 (and Lead Plague did a stunning paint job on this one). For context, there used to be an annual event called Games Day (I was at my first in 2003) and most larger target markets had their own, so there was beside the UK and (multiple) US Games Days some in Germany, Spain and France. And for each year, there were "limited" Games Day miniatures you could only buy at the event - I put the limited in air quotes, because the numbers these were produced and sold exceeds the production runs of the regular ranges of other manufacturers.

Wolfbane Art recreated this stunning sculpt with an undead variant of this Bretonnian Knight, and I wanted it since I saw the greens on instagram. As Wolfbane is an italian company, you can easily buy it within Europe with just the shipping through etsy. It was high in demand, so I got my hands on it in the second stocking. It is a single piece metal casting. Good amount of details, minor mould lines and easily cleaned up.

I put him on a round base with some base decoration to fit in.

To prepare him for the upcoming paint job, he got a black undercoat and light grey drybrush.

My painting progress, for warbands / army projects - not single miniatures or so, is usually the black primer with a light drybrush. This is less for zenital lighting, but rather for me to see where the details are, areas end and such. And then I block in the base colours for each section to prepare a first wash. I did a clean up on the models and went on from there. All the bases are painted with Army Painter Leather Brown WP1123, which is a substitute for the discontinued Graveyard Earth by Citadel.

With the Ghosts I went with AP Green Tone, as I wanted to keep the spooky colours and not numb or dirty them down with a brown or black wash. For the Skeletons I gave the Citadel Contrast Paints a try and I have to say I am amazed how good these came out just with the single coat of Skeleton Horde, without further touch up. This is a great base for further highlights and details. As for the other miniatures, I used Soft and Strong Tone, depending on the brightness of the base colour.

Let that thoroughly dry and I went on with a Strong Tone was on the bases, over which I did a dry brush of AP Leather Brown followed by AP Necrotic Flesh. With the other warbands I used P3 Hammerfall Khaki, but I wanted a slightly more undead / pale tone, and cleaned up the base trims.

This won't win me any trophies, but it would certainly be enough for "tabletop standard" for a gaming weekend and I have to keep in mind and remember myself that this first step, getting them to their first post-wash is what takes me the most motivation, but afterwards it is already rewarding and adding details from there goes a long way.

In addition, I got this box from my parents. I think there used to be sweets or something like that in there, and I am thinking about making it a themed transport box for skirmish games. Adding a small padded Feldherr inlay and two compartments for markers.

The third part will cover further details and some proper scenic shots of the miniatures in front of the town buildings. So stay tuned!
