Star Wars Legion – ARF Troopers Unit Expansion

As part of the new releases from the AdeptiCon Roadmap, there are lots of new plastic kits, including the ARF Trooper Unit Expansion of the Galactic Republic for Star Wars: Legion.

The box contains eight miniatures: a Jedi Knight and seven ARF Troopers, one of whom is armed with an RPS-6 Launcher and the others with DC-15A blasters. The RRP is 55 USD.

ARF stands for Advanced Recon Force, and their squad is led by a Jedi Knight — a male Zabrak, similar to Agen Kolar or Eeth Koth.

The Star Wars games by Asmodee/Atomic Mass Games cover two time periods: both take place in the Star Wars universe, but are divided roughly into the Clone Wars era (22–19 BBY, or Before the Battle of Yavin) and the Galactic Civil War era (4–5 ABY, or After the Battle of Yavin).

It is not uncommon for tabletop wargames to be divided into different time periods; for example, World War II rule sets such as Flames of War and Bolt Action are also divided into early, (sometimes) mid and late war.

The sprues, bases, and printed gaming materials are packed in zip-lock bags. You won't find assembly instructions with Atomic Mass Games products; these are kept online. They can be accessed either via a QR code or by visiting the ARF Trooper Unit Expansion page.

The printed materials are included in multiple languages: English, German, French and Spanish.

Two sprues for the ARF troopers are included, along with some optional parts — more on these below. The casting is well done, with only minor mould lines and no other issues.

The sprues provide enough parts to build a full squad of seven ARF troopers and one Jedi Knight. The 25 mm round bases are included as well.

We are not going to build a full squad, but rather a few miniatures to demonstrate the range of poses available, beginning with the Jedi Knight.

The male Zabrak comes with a few options. You can equip him with a single lightsaber, two lightsabers, or even a double-bladed lightsaber like that carried by Darth Maul. Additionally, his head can be either bare or partially hooded. This makes great use of plastic as a material for wargaming, ensuring that no two Jedi Knights look the same.

As for the ARF Troopers, there are seven different poses, six of which feature DC-15A blasters. The ARF Troopers can be built with either bare heads or helmets. Some of them have small base toppers for more dynamic poses.

One of the ARF Troopers carries the squad's RPS-6 Launcher, and he can be built with or without a helmet. To aid his aim, I opted for the helmet variant.

As the question has come up a couple of times, here's how Star Wars Shatterpoint compares to Legion. Shatterpoint is slightly bigger, with a scale of roughly 40 mm, and has more heroic proportions compared to Legion's rather 32–35 mm true scale.

The miniatures are well designed and show details from all angles.

Conclusion

This is a very well-made unit box for Star Wars: Legion. With eight miniatures, it is a decent size and the additional options provide value for money. My personal highlights are certainly the Jedi Knight with its two head variants, and the fact that you can customise the lightsabers. The optional helmets for the Clone Troopers are great, too.

Overall, assembly is very easy. The parts can be quickly removed and cleaned from the sprue. There is a variety of poses suitable for skirmish and platoon-sized games. I'm looking forward to seeing more units with these options.

In terms of pricing, roughly 50 USD per unit is normal nowadays. Yes, it is more expensive than historical wargaming, but this is nothing unusual in fictional settings.

Star Wars Legions is a game by Atomic Mass Games and distributed by Asmodee.
