Sword and Sorcery Adventures – Part 1
There’s always something magical about a new project, even if it isn’t entirely new. After all, I started a few smaller fantasy projects quite some time ago, but never finished them. I plan to change that now by piecing together all those little project snippets into a bigger picture.
But one thing at a time, because I’m using a little trick here. Like most hobbyists, I have a veritable cornucopia of ideas at home and just as many miniatures lying around, all roughly in the classic 28mm scale. But how do you motivate yourself to actually paint such a large pile of quite diverse models?
The solution comes in the form of a story that spans multiple game systems, allowing you to take your time getting to know the various protagonists and antagonists. Since the past ten years have enriched the hobby with a variety of fantasy skirmish games and solo-play systems, it’s entirely possible to paint smaller groups of miniatures for different systems and still play occasionally.
For me, that's a major source of motivation.
In addition, Osprey recently announced a game that caught my attention: Pillars of Gromlak. Based on the blurb, it sounds like a small, story-driven campaign game for those whose hearts have always leaned a little more towards the green – which is exactly my cup of tea.
Now, of course, you might think it’s quite a risk to craft and paint miniatures for a game whose rules you don’t know yet. But as I already mentioned, there are many systems available these days, and since I’m already familiar with the rules for quite a few of them and want to play them, I won’t lose out on anything in the long run, even in the worst-case scenario.
A few Goblins from NorthStar are kicking off the project. If you want a lot of miniatures for a good price, the boxes from the Oathmark series are a great choice. For a mere 30 Euros, you get just as many goblins, and I inherited half of them from Bunkerboss Dennis after his review. In addition, TTW forum member Erkwin donated a Warlord Orcs sprueset to me, which I used to convert a few models so that I’ll end up with 20 greenskins in total.
You'll see what happened next in the upcoming articles. In those, I'll also start gradually building up the story. Anyone who wants to get involved is welcome to share suggestions for the world, names, and more.
Fantastic regards
Dino
