Warhammer Quest – Darkwater Unboxing

Today, we will be covering the latest release of Warhammer Quest - Darkwater. The pictures in this article show the German version, Dunkelwasser, but it is identical to the English release, except for the translated printed parts.

We previously covered Warhammer Quest Blackstone Fortress in 2018, as well as parts of Cursed City, and we are happy for the game to return to the fantasy setting.

Warhammer Quest - Darkwater

The Warhammer Quest series began around 30 years ago in 1995 with the original Warhammer Quest. At that time, Games Workshop collaborated with companies such as Hasbro to expand the reach of their Citadel miniatures range. Similar to HeroQuest, it was sold on a wider scale - in department stores, for example, alongside board games - and thus reached more people than their usual products, which were limited to comic book stores, fantasy stores, their own Games Workshop stores, and mail order.

Warhammer Quest – Darkwater The Manticore Knight

This time, alongside unboxing Warhammer Quest Darkwater, we’re trying something new - we’re painting a selection of miniatures from the set.

Warhammer Quest - Darkwater Warhammer Quest: Darkwater - Edmark Valoran The Manticore Knight

After going through the Heroes sprue, I considered which figure would be the most interesting for me to paint. While avoiding the main character was tempting, I ultimately decided on Edmark Valoran, the Manticore Knight. Something about this model really stood out, and I wanted to experiment with a new paint scheme for him.

Let’s start by assembling the miniature. The entire set is designed as push-fit (as we know it from various starter sets and the Underworld range), so glue isn’t strictly necessary, but I highly recommend using it for a clean fit. Just pushing the parts together might leave gaps and the plastic glue not only bonds the parts together but actually melts them, filling in smaller gaps. All heroes come in light beige plastic, divided into several finely detailed components on the sprue. The Manticore Knight, for example, consists of five pieces plus a round base with a peg hole instead of a slot.

Warhammer World Championship Preview 2025 – Part 2

After covering the previews for Warhammer 40,000 and Horus Heresy we now move on to the fantastic realms of Warhammer with The Old World and Age of Sigmar ... and the return of Warhammer Quest!

Warhammer World Championship Preview 2025

While the Big Summer Preview for Warhammer The Old World, this one picks up the introduction of Grand Cathay from earlier this year and shows an extensive second wave with lots of additional choices for their army.

With the Astromanacers of the Celestial Court more magic is added, in a familiar way with a mounted wizard and on one foot, along with a raven familiar. Both models come with different options.

Warhammer Quest – Cursed City Nightwars

The first supplement for Warhammer Quest - Cursed City is available with Night Wars. It's been a long time since the initial release of Cursed City, so give me a brief moment to get you up to speed.

Warhammer Quest - Cursed City Night Wars

The Warhammer Quest series is an old range of miniature board games and started almost 30 years ago in 1995 with the original Warhammer Quest, when Games Workshop co-operated with companies like Hasbro to reach a broader audience for their range of Citadel miniatures. In 2017 Warhammer Quest returned, into the newly created narrative of Age of Sigmar, with Silver Tower in 2016 and Shadows over Hammerhal in 2017. In 2018 with Blackstone Fortress the Warhammer Quest series even received a 40k spin-off, that was quite successful and covered with multiple supplements that reintroduced many Rogue Trader elements into the game, like the Dread Ambull.

Blackstone Fortress – The Dreaded Ambull

The first supplement for Warhammer Quest Blackstone Fortress was released last weekend. It is called, The Dreaded Ambull, and covers a new scenario including matching upgrades and miniatures.

When Blackstone Fortress was released, it was already announced, that it wouldn't stay a single release and further supplements and additions would be released. It is once again, a blast from the past, bringing the Ambull from the Rogue Trader era of Warhammer 40,000 into today's releases. Therefore catching not only the attention as a new release, but from the "veterans" as well.

Warhammer Quest Blackstone Fortress

Back in 1989, Games Workshop teamed up with Hasbro / MB and released with Heroquest - a fantasy board game with miniatures. For many this was the beginning of their wargaming hobby. Due to the fact, that it was a board game and sold as such in toy stores and not "just" comic book and gaming stores, the game reached a much broader audience. 2 years after they stopped producing Heroquest in 1993, a derivative - Warhammer Quest - was introduced. Still using the Citadel Miniatures but featuring now modular floor tiles instead of a fixed board, the game was a success and received a lot of additional content in form of supplements, articles in White Dwarf and Citadel Journal. And now, with Warhammer Quest Blackstone Fortress Games Workshop continues the more than 20 year old brand and expands it for the first time into the universe of Warhammer 40,000 (as Space Crusade etc. are games of their own).

It comes a bit as a surprise, as we already had quite a lot of boxed sets this year by Games Workshop, just last month the one-off Speed Freeks, the month before that the Rogue Trader expansion for Kill Team. But here it is, a massive dungeon crawler just before Christmas.

Blackstone, 3D-Prints and Birthdays

Let me sum up this week. I'm currently preparing the review on Warhammer Quest Blackstone Fortress. If you pre-order it, many stores will give you posters and a poker chip as a bonus. And I already gathered a couple of miniatures for the scale comparison shots. In case you have any wishes, what I should cover within the review, just let me know and I'll try to put it into the upcoming article.
