Adeptus Titanicus – Adding a Legion to your Legio
With the excitement about the re-release of Epic as Horus Heresy Legions Imperialis, you might be wondering which Astartes Legion to choose. And while this can be an entirely new project and that is absolutely fine, you might want to use your collection of Adeptus Titanicus miniatures.
Which Legion would be a proper fit to your Legio? Let us try to answer these questions, based upon the available lore. And these are mere suggestions. The grim dark future is expands into a vast universe, so there is plenty of space for your own campaigns and combinations that aren't listed below, for multiple reasons (pre-heresy alliances, loyalists of traitor legions, Blackshields etc.). But as I am aware that a lot of the 30k community values the lore, I want to provide an overview for the Titan Legions of the Loyalist and Traitor book.
We start with the first 16 Titan Legios from the Loyalist book. With some Legios, like Astorum or Gryphonicus you can basically go with every Space Marines Legion there was. Some even fought in the pre-heresy times with later Traitor Legions, in case you are interested in something a bit more niche. While some Legios have no official / canon connections towards Astartes, this gives you room for your own narratives, like Honorum, Osedax or Metalica.
Legio Astorum - Warp Runners
Allied War Houses: Hawkwood, Mortimer, Terryn
There are records of Legio Astorum fighting alongside the following Space Marine Legions during the Horus Heresy
- Dark Angels
- White Scars
- Space Wolves
- Imperial Fists
- Blood Angels
- Iron Hands
- Ultramarines
- Thousand Sons (Pre-Heresy)
- Salamanders
Legio Astraman - Morning Stars
Allied War Houses: Moritain, Col'khak
The Legio Astraman has only official records of fighting with the Raven Guard. Yet, as I play them in Adeptus Titanicus, I have them allied with the Knight House of Moritain and the 7th Legion, the Imperial Fists in Epic 30k / the upcoming Legions Imperialis.
- Raven Guard
Legio Atarus - Firebrands
Allied War Houses: Col'khak, Arakon, Vornherr
As Legio Atarus fought on Isstvan V, it fought with with these Astartes Legios:
- White Scars
- Blood Angels
- Iron Hands
- Salamanders
- Raven Guard
Legio Crucius - Warmongers
Allied War Houses: Devine, Donar, Indra, Kaska, Kaushik, Mamaragon, Sidus, Tazkhar
- Blood Angels
- Ultramarines
Legio Defensor - Nova Guard
Allied War Houses: Beaumaris, Vyronii, Sterlund
There are only records of the Legio Defensor fighting alongside one Space Marine Legion, supporting the Word Bearers pre-heresy.
- Word Bearers (Pre-Heresy)
Legio Fortidus - Dauntless
Allied War Houses: Devine, Donar, Indra, Kaska, Kaushik, Mamaragon, Taranis, Tazkhar, Zavora
- Blood Angels
- Ultramarines
Legio Gryphonicus - War Griffons
Allied War Houses: Coldshroud, Various other Knight Houses
The War Griffons have great flexibility, as they not only fought with every Astartes Legion beside the Raven Guard, and even Iron Warriors Loyalists, in case you want to build a project around Barabas Dantioch.
- Dark Angels
- Iron Warriors (Loyalists)
- White Scars
- Space Wolves
- Imperial Fists
- Blood Angels
- Iron Hands
- Ultramarines
- Salamanders
Legio Honorum - Death Bolts
Allied War Houses: Ioeden, Vornherr
No official records of Alliances with Space Marines Legions, but as the Legio Honorum was located in the Segmenta Ultima and their Allied Knight House Vornherr fought with the Ultramarines, they would be a lore-possible match up.
- None
Legio Ignatum - The Fire Wasps
Allied War Houses: Hermetika, Moritain, Taranis, Vyridion
With the exception of the Dark Angels and Raven Guard, the Fire Wasps fought alongside every Space Marine Legion.
- White Scars
- Space Wolves
- Imperial Fists
- Blood Angels
- Iron Hands
- Ultramarines
- Salamanders
Legio Lysanda - Sentinels of the Edge
Allied War Houses: None
The Sentinels of the Edge fought in the Shadow Crusade to defend the Realm of Ultramar and as such were allied with the Ultramarines.
- Ultramarines
Legio Metalica
Allied War Houses: Krast, Raven, Lakar, Vornherr
No official records of Alliances with Space Marines Legions, yet, prior to the Horus Heresy, during the great crusade they fought with Roboute Guilliman, and as such could have ties to the Ultramarines. Parts of the Legio Metalica turned traitor, so to add further irritation to that mix, the Alpha Legion could be an interesting ally (maybe even with decoys / camouflaged troops as a different legion).
- None
Legio Oberon - Death Bolts II
Allied War Houses: Orhlacc, Vornherr, Vyronii
Legio Oberon were among those who fought in the Crusade of Iron on Calth and as such were allied with the 13th Legion.
- Ultramarines
Legio Osedax - Cockatrices
Allied War Houses: Arx Canis, Mehdrisur, Sidus, Skramasax, Taranis, Zavora
No official records of Alliances with Space Marines Legions, only that they fought against World Eaters and Word Bearers.
- None
Legio Praesagius - True Messengers
Allied War Houses: Orhlacc, Vornherr
Legio Praesagius are long-standing allies of the Ultramarines and fought with them at the Battle of Calth.
- Ultramarines
- Word Bearers (Pre-Heresy)
Legio Solaria - Imperial Hunters
Allied War Houses: Procon Vi, Cadmus, Hyperion, Konor, Megron, Vyronii
The Imperial Hunters have broad options to choose from, as they allied with every Space Marine Legion beside the Imperial Fists and Raven Guard.
- Dark Angels
- White Scars
- Space Wolves
- Blood Angels
- Iron Hands
- Ultramarines
- Salamanders
Legio Venator - Iron Spiders
Allied War Houses: Numerous Freeblade
No official records of Alliances with Space Marines Legions, but as Legio Venator had its own internal struggles during the Horus Heresy, the Legio broke apart, with Venator tending towards the Emperor and those who favoured the Warmaster seceded to form Legio Tritonis.
- None
And to round it up, here is an overview on which Titan Legio fought alongside with Astartes Legions. This just what we know so far from the published canon. With the books moving further into the Siege of Terra, we might get further updates on the final stage of the Horus Heresy.
But of course, that is "just" the official story and the galaxy is big enough to provide space for your own campaigns, alliances and conflicts. Along with the aspect, that not every Titan Legio or Knight Household had to fight allied with Space Marines, but a vast choice of other factions involved in this conflict, like the Solar Auxiliar (both loyal and traitors), Imperial or Renegade Militias, and the (Dark Mechanicum).
