A miniature Odyssey – With Spear and Shield

When you think of ancient Greece, you simply cannot help but think of a Hoplite armed with a shield and spear. Logically many Hoplites died in the battles and so it is not surprising that I painted some skeletons with exactly this combination of weapons for the second block for the summer project.

Like their living counterparts, they stand on a triangular base, not on a round one, like the archers. Three such regiments can join together to form a Phalanx, which can be used to save on movement actions or get a little more punch in melee combat. How well this works for the skeletons, I don't know yet, because I haven't yet led my Army of Hades into the field.

All in all I am satisfied with the results so far in terms of painting. Actually I wanted to add decals to the shields, but due to the Covid situation delivery times are sometimes very long and I had so much fun with the minis that I didn't want to wait any longer and so I finished the second block.

Especially painting the rust effect on the bronze shields was fun again. At first I was a bit worried, because I wanted to include the army color, but with all the bone colors it didn't matter in the end.

With almost two months remaining for the third block, I'm now also confident that I can take another bonus round. To finish off, I'll leave another motivating army picture and a little gimmick that was done with an effects app to add that little extra something to the atmosphere.
