Necromunda – Slave Ogryn Gang

After expansions for the regular houses with special gangers, the latest plastic kit for Necromunda covers the big guys - Slave and Servitor Ogryns. Games Workshop offers these in two variants, as the Jotunn H Grade Servitor Ogryns or as a full Slave Ogryn Gang. And after roughly half a year, after its initial announcement in February 2020, the unit as part of the House of Chains is available.

Ogryns are a new addition to the underhive (if you exclude house rules or experimental rules from the Fanatic magazine and such), but a very fitting one. A lot of the gangs have access to brutes, and what is more brute than an Ogryn? There are two choices, you can either go for a double pack of Servitor Ogryns for 32,50 EUR or the Slave Ogryn Gang of 6 for 65,00 EUR. The pieces are in both cases identical, the double-sprue is simply covered three times in the gang box.

Today we will cover the whole Ogryn Slave Gang, and the boxed set covers the instructions (detailled further below) and 6 Necromunda style 40mm round bases.

The instructions are pretty clear and cover all the variants you can build from the two different bodies and four different arms, including a few optional parts.

Casting is well done and the mixture of organic and technical pieces have a great amount of details. There is still a bit room here and there, but overall a good layout and all pieces are reachable and can be cleaned from the sprue without being damaged or lost.

There is an A and B of the upper torso, groin and pair of legs. The upper torso is almost identical, just with minor differences, and it fits boths lower body designs. The calves / legs can't be swapped, so one of them always has the prosthetic left leg.

There are four different options (two for the left and two for the right arm) for the armament, as well as a blank right arm joint. A pair of augmetic fists, that can be used individual, a storm-welder and a spud-jacker (wrench). The right weapon arm is stabilized with a device from the neck.

For each pair of Ogryns you have four different heads along with a robotic head, along with a welding mask. Beyond that, you have further options for the body. A powerpack with two different antennas, along with power cables for the tools or augmetic fists and smaller additions to the belt, like tubes or a ring.

This kit adds to the multiple ogre and ogryn kits, already available by Games Workshop. Here's a comparison with the bullgryns and the Blood Bowl Ogre.

Conclusion
The Slave Ogryns / Jotunn Servitors are an interesting kit and the price advantage of the bigger set (you save 33%) makes it quite a deal. 32,50 EUR for the double pack is reasonable, but in the larger set the price goes town to roughly 10,50 EUR per model.

The only thing is, that due to the A/B variants, they still feel a bit too close to eachother, even if you mix them.  A different tool or variant of the storm-welder would have been a great addition to the kit. And more options two switch weaponry between left and right. Otherwise I would recommend mixing them with the Blood Bowl Ogre or Militarum Auxillia Ogryns, for proper variation. That is actually something I want to pick up in another article, to show you how versatile this box can be, if you add the right bits to it.

Beyond Necromunda I can really see these miniatures being used with armies like the Adeptus Mechanicus or Genestealer Cult (in this case with a bit of conversion), due to the servitor armament with power tools and equipment.

Warhammer 40,000 and Necromunda are brands by Games Workshop.
