A visit to … Fantasy-Spiele Würzburg e.V.
Last year, Dino started to combine his business trips with visits to tabletop clubs. We covered our visits in Bedburg and Aachen, and now with me attending a summit in Würzburg, I did the same and got in touch with the local gaming club, Fantasy-Spiele Würzburg e.V.
Fantasy-Spiele Würzburg is not just a wargaming club, but they do board games, pen & paper and trading card games as well and quite a lot, as every week is quite busy and offers a lot for the about 180 (!) members of the club. But more on that below.
Where is Würzburg and what do I need to about this city? Würzburg is a German city in the region of Franconia in the northern part of Bavaria. It is roughly in the middle between Frankfurt and Nuremberg (about an hour from each city). As a Franconian city you may choose your poison from hearty dishes, various beers and wine, everything not that far from eachother in the city with a population of 120,000.
And my stay in Würzburg was perfectly timed, as I arrived on a monday and mondays are tabletop night at their club house. Happy coincedence. The Fantasy-Spiele Würzburg e.V. has their own club rooms in the south-eastern part of the city, only a few stops by bus and it cost me less than 5 EUR for a day ticket from the city centre to get there.
They have a large collection of games and even a small kitchen, that covers warm and cold snacks as well as beverages. And as you can see, they are quite busy:
- Mondays 7 pm - Tabletop Night
- Tuesdays 7 pm - Magic the Gathering, every other week Pauper
- Wednesday 7 pm - Boardgames, MtG Draft and every other week Netrunner
- Thursdays 7 pm - Variants of MtG
- Friday 7 pm - Game Night!
- Saturday 6 pm - Tabletop Night, and once per months from 3 pm painting get together
- Sundays 2 pm - Open Gaming, MtG, last sunday of each month Pen & Paper
Tobias is the head of the tabletop part of the club and showed me around. As he is a Warcor, and they playtested a new mission they wrote for their inhouse Infinity League.
In the next room a few people played Warcry and a match of Warhammer 40k. Really love the Dankhold Troggoth and converted Death Guard.
The club lent me a Warcry warband, so I could have a spontaneous game with Norbert. Quick game and perfect to get in a few rounds on an evening like this.
Fantasy-Spiele Würzburg e.V. does themed month covering specific topics. April was Warcry theme month. They'll do a Gaslands month shortly, giving each player the chance to get in the game, have a few cars painted and put them on the tabletop. For Star Wars Day for example, they'll host a few round of Star Wars themed games.
If you're from around the area or happen to travel by, give it a try and get in touch with them. It is worth it!
Thanks to Tobias for having me. Really looking foward to your plans in the future and I'll make sure, to put you in my schedule the next time, I'm in Franconia!
