Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team – Ashes of Faith Supplement

It's been a while, since the last that the we covered a supplement for Kill Team on here. Back in 2018 we covered the semi-stand-alone boxed set of Rogue Trader, which was introduced earlier that year at Warhammer Fest Europe. And it is pretty similar with Warhammer 40,000  Kill Team - Ashes of Faith, a narrative supplement for Kill Team, which was introduced on Warhammer Fest a few weeks ago as well.

Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team - Ashes of Faith Supplement

Unlike other Kill Team boxed sets, this one comes without terrain, but with a narrative campaign, which provides a bit of development for the teams. The two factions covered in this set are the Inquisition, with a retinue of Inquisitorial Agents and Ancillary support units (Scions and Sisters of Silence) and a cult of Chaos. Quite the stack of miniatures, but more on that later. You are welcomed by a lot of plastic once you open up the box. Beneath that, you'll find a divider with the Warhammer logo, protecting the remaining game materials (which we will show you in detail further below) from the sprues.

Please note: This is not a s stand-alone game, you'll need a copy of the Kill Team Core rules to make full use of this supplement.

The Ashes of Faith supplement has a RRP of 125 EUR and provides you with the following items:

  • 40 plastic miniatures (An Inquisitorial Kill Team with 17 miniatures and 23 Chaos Cult models)
  • Softback Kill Team: Ashes of Faith factions book (72-pages), with background material, new rules and datacards.
  • Softback Kill Team: Ashes of Faith campaign book (40-page ): Two-player Ashes of Faith campaign, these rules can be used with any kill team in narrative, open, or matched play, and include a variety of unique missions and territory.
  • Ashes of Faith Campaign markers (Boards with reusable stickers)
  • Two Card decks with Campaign Cards and Kill Team Actions cards (Ruses, Conspirators, Schemes, Territories, Rewards)

If you're wondering about the Horus Heresy decal sheet. That's in there because of the Sisters of Silence decals. As for the gaming mechanics, Games Workshop covers the phases of the game on their Warhammer Community page themself. Including an introduction on the Inquisitorial Agents, as well as the mid-game mutation of the Chaos cult.

Beside the rules and tokens, you get a huge load of sprues. Ashes of Faith combines 6 individual plastic kits in a single supplement. That's quite extensive.

We have the Militarum Tempestus Scions (Command Squad) from 2014 in there with a RRP 35 EUR. From this classic, multipart kit you can build 5 different characters, including the command option. They are still in the "beefier" design and were introduced as a veteran unit of the Imperial Guard / Astra Militarum.

The Sisters of Silence (Prosecutor, Vigilator or Witchseeker) have a RRP of 45 EUR and were part of the Burning of Prospero boxed set, which was released in 2016. Another multipart kit, which gives you the option to build 5 characters and even includes the weapons and gear for the three different units available.  As these and the Scions are auxiliary models and almost 10 years old, I won't focus on them in this review.

And now we move on to the 23 miniatures chaos cult, where Games Workshop adds the full palette. You get the Chaos Space Marine Cultists Dark Commune with a RRP 42,50 EUR, 5 models in the newer style, which means fixed positions and slender proportions. These are the 5 model HQ unit for the cult, bearing banners and icons.

The regular rank and file grunts of your cult are the Chaos Space Marine Cultists, 10 miniatures for RRP 40 EUR. Unfortunately, these are single pose as well. You can convert them, as they are plastic, but it is not provided right away from the design. These were part of the recently released Wrath of the Soul Forge King boxed set, with Vashtorr the Arkifane.

To give you the options of progress, there is this set of Chaos Space Marine Accursed Cultists (RRP 42,50 EUR), covering five twisted Mutants and three horrifying Torments. Another set of single poses, so no variants included in here.

For the chaos cult, I have a special idea and will use the bits and pieces for conversions of a Traitor Titan Legio for Adeptus Titanicus, in my case Legio Magna. This will provide an article series on its own and be the antagonists to my Legio Astraman.

But let's see for the actual new models in this set, the Inquisitorial Agents that were introduced at Warhammer Fest. We don't have a RRP on this set of 7 miniatures, but so far, the other sets alone have a RRP of 205 EUR, so if this clocks in at around 40-45 EURs, you get a 50% discount with this boxed set and the whole rules for free.

The Inquisitorial Agents cover a Kill Team with some options that I'll cover in detail further below. You basically have a list with some fixed elements and some variables and these sprues cover them to some extent. The models are spread across 3 small sprues, and are mostly not single pose models but clearly structured A / B variants.

Beside the 3 sprues you get round bases for them, 6x 25mm and a 32mm base.

You're not completely free in building these. You have three fixed models and four models, where you have to choose between variant A or B. This will leave you with some bits at the end, which is nice, but limits your options from the kit to a certain degree and you will have to buy a second set, to cover all poses.

The first choice you have to make, is if you either have the Interrogator Agent or Enlightener Agent. They share the same body and are distinguished by the head and arm options. I went with the Interrogator, as this seemed like a better fit for a leader.

This companion, a servo skull (Tome Skull), is made from two parts. No options here and he counts as a full model.

The Autosavant, a scribe servitor has only a minor option, as you get two faces to choose from. Honestly, as his face is tilted towards the ground, you can barely see the difference and it is a bit pointless to add such a minor detail, that not really can be noted. If it was different arms or maybe a second scroll, that would have been cooler.

The battle servitor is the third model with a fixed set, yet he gives you the choice between three weapon systems. Due to the way these are cut, you can easily magnetize them. And he's a big boy, standing on a 32mm round as well as being clearly taller than the other models of that retinue.

Let us move on to the three other Inquisitorial Agents, where we have to choose between A and B. This is the Questkeeper and Pistoleer Agent, where from my point of view the Pistoleer is the clearly cooler option. Again, they share the same body and are altered with the arms and head option.

As we're going for a ranged weapon focus on this set, when I came to this model, which can either be a Mystic or Hexorcist Agent, I went for the Shotgun Priest. In the fourth picture, I did a quick mock up, if you tinker around with the spare bits from other models. To a certain degree you can mix and match these, but not fully, as part of the joints are not entirely flat.

And the last model from the Inquisitorial Agents was the most hyped one in this kit, a nod to the old 54mm Inquisitor range, we get our own Sgt. Stone in 28mm. And such the choice between the Death World Veteran and Penal Legion Soldier was clear - Sgt. Stone it is. He even comes with his sawn-off hand trophy at his belt. Completing our small Kill Team of 7 models.

And these are all the spare parts from the variants, I couldn't build. Due to their proportions, I assume that the Necromunda plastic kits (along with the new Cadians and Deathkorps), might be best body donors to make use of them, as the older Imperial / Inquisitorial models, might be a bit too bulky.

To compare these with the newer models, you can see, slender proportion. Less overdrawn details and faces, but even compared to the more realistic proportions of newer releases, they are a bit slim. How do they mix in with the extended Inquisition range? Let's see the comparison with some metal models from the 2000s, you can see the Servitor is much taller, yet the plastic kit should be able to mix in with the metal miniatures.

The Agents have been shown multiple times, not only here but on promo posts by Warhammer Community, so the back picture is probably the one with the most amount of new information.

Conclusion
I expected this supplement to be more expensive than 125 EUR, especially with the amount of plastic. We have around 250 EURs RRP of plastic kits in here. Yes, some feel like they are getting rid of older stock. This is something that came up with different releases in the last few months (like the Chaos part or the Dark Angel Terminators in the Soul Forge set). The addition of a narrative part for Kill Team is nice, especially the Inquisitorial Agents, as this could open up a broader option for the Inq28 community to make use of their models with less "home brew" rules, but on regular game night with more potential players.

For the models themself, it is a hard contrast in here. You have the 201x multipart plastic kits, which give you lots of options to mix and mash, easily straight from the sprue, and then you have single pose miniatures.  Where everyone will look the same, across the whole hobby, unless you convert them yourself and, in some cases, this isn't that easy, as the poses etc. won't just let you swap an arm or head just like that. As for the Inquisitorial Agents - they are nice, but I think they scored below their potential. You have three Ordos of the Inquisition, in this case it is due to the match up with the Chaos, probably the Ordo Hereticus. So, either we receive other sets, that might cover Ordo Xenos or Malleus. Which would be a cool option for further kill teams, as you could spin the story further, add in Aliens and Daemons from the existing range as counter parts of the possible new Inquisitorial Agents (with other support units). But even with that option down the road, I would have liked this new set to cover more options (like third heads, optional gear, other weapons, small icons and charms) and at least fewer static poses. All of them are standing straight, booth feet on the ground, robes covering the lower part of their body. We know Games Workshop can do more than that.

And on a side note, I truly hope, that the availability of this boxed set will be better than the last few releases. For multiple reasons, I want people to be able to get their hands on novelties - especially when we took our time to cover them here - and I don't want scalpers to benefit from these situations. Beyond that, if this boxed set should be OOP shortly after the release, please be patient. At least the Agents will be released as a kit on their own in a few months.
