The next shipment of the German Issues of Stormbringer by Hachette arrived, issues #04 to 07.

We showed you the initial shipment with the first three issues over here, and continue today with the next four issues, covering the first paints and further miniatures.

All the issues from now on are 10,99 EUR and we will compare how much savings you have with these.

The fourth issue was released on February 14th, but came in a combined shipping for the subscribers.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Stormbringer Issue 04

Issue 04 of Stormbringer covers four paints and a starter brush. Regarding calculating the saving, we will compare the starter brush with an STC Layer M brush, who is currently sold for 9,30 EUR. The four Citadel base colours are Retributor Armour (4,80 EUR), Leadbelcher (3,60 EUR), Orruk Flesh (3,60 EUR) and Kantor Blue (3,60 EUR). This gives you a total value of 24,90 EUR, saving more than 50%.

Games Workshop has different type of paints within their Citadel Colour range and offer a broad assortment of tutorials on their use. The idea is primarely that you use the Base paints to create a foundation for your paint job, add further layers and highlights using the Layer paints and bring it back down / together using a Shade paint. There are further categories, Dry paints for dry-brushing, Technicals for various special effects and Contrast colours, which we have covered in a broad series of articles on this blog as well.

As per content, we get the basics of our painting setup. As somebody who's already been in the hobby for some time, I like that this is kept appropiate for the audience in a simple and not overloaded way. Especially as the painting tutorials get you in easy steps towards a bigger goal and work with things you have from the Stormbringer issues, along with some basic items you very likely have at home (like a spare mug or jar and some paper towels). You might be irritated about the two colour Kruleboyz, but that's already better than just grey and with the next issues and the addition of further paints, we're getting somewhere battle-ready.

In addition, in this issue the Stormhost of the Iron Thanes is introduced. A stormhost is what a "house" or legion of Stormcast Eternals is called, and Hachette got together with Games Workshop to create their own stormhost for the series of Stormbringer, the Iron Thanes. With a red main colour they surely stand out compared to the Hammers of Sigmar, in their bright gold and blue. Never the less, the tutorials for the Stormcast Eternals cover the Hammers of Sigmar and not the Iron Thanes, those are more an addition for lore.

In the fifth issue, that was released on February 21st, you get a limited variant of the Praetor Prime, that is exclusive to the Stormbringer magazine along with some regular dice.

The Praetor Prime comes in a small sprue and a regular 40mm round base. The supporting unit of Praetors will come in one of the upcoming issues. About savings, it depends a bit, what we take for comparison. The regular set of 3 praetors at 42,50 EUR RRP gives you the option to build a single praetor prime, but other Stormcast individual unit heroes are 24 EUR (like the Knight Questor or Knight Heraldor) comparing the 10,99 EUR against 14,16 to 24 EUR, or even 30+ EUR if you take the named characters.

In this issue, obviously you get the instructions for the Praetor Prime, along with some more information on painting. Some basic tipps regarding the usage of acrylic paints (like thinning down, keeping the brushes clean and things like that). Beyond this, we get more information on the lore of the Arcane Cosmos and the pantheon of chaos is introduced, including the horned rat.

Issue number 6 was released on February 28th, and brought you 10 Hobgrot Slittas.

These guys are lower warriors of the Kruleboyz and while they are push-fit, you get a proper amount of variants and options with these. They are sold as a pack of 20 for 45 EUR RRP, giving you 22,50 EUR value for this issue of 10,99 EUR. There will be a second unit of Hobgrot Slittas down the line, with issue number 30. They come with 25mm round bases.

A great thing about these is, you have two options for banners, two options for musicians and even two different type of champions.

This issue is all about the Kruleboyz Hobgrot Slittas. We get the lore on this unit, along with the assembly and painting instruction (you're applying leadbelcher and orruk flesh, similar to the tutorial from issue #04 with the Gutrippaz) and the introduction on the rules get more and more elaborate, as you now have more units to choose from and the first introduction of ranged combat.

With issue #07 you receive two more paints, giving you a total of 6 paint pots so far, this is the fourth issue of the second subscription shipment.

Along with the magazine you get the base paints Catachan Flesh (3,60 EUR) and Corax White (3,60 EUR) as well as a ruler, which unfortunately means, negative savings on this individual issue (10,99 EUR vs 7,20 EUR of paints). If they had moved the second brush from issue #08 forward to this, it would have been even out. For the issue itself as a standalone this might be odd looking, but for the bigger picture, we have already saved quite a lot of bucks that it evens out this issue.

Regarding the content, there is some light introduction on the realms within Age of Sigmar, but mostly the painting parts, where you add further contrasting paints and layers to the miniatures you already have. Especially the Stormcast Eternals can be moved close to battle ready with the combination of Retribution Armour, Kantor Blue and the Corax White you now have. Corax White is an impressive white paint, it has a good coverage. I switched from Grey Seer to Corax White in my Adeptus Titanicus project for the white base layers and was really happy with the result.

On the back of each issue you get a preview on the next two issues. As this wouldn't make sense to show for the ones we already have shown above, we're looking forward to issue #08 and #09. These will give us two more characters for Stormcast Eternals and Kruleboyz, both from the Dominion starter set for Age of Sigmar.

As a premium subscriber I received in addition a binder, which holds the content of the issues you're sent with the miniatures. The binder is made from thick material and has a glossy coating. On the inside you get an overview on the world of Age of Sigmar. We're moving away from the Old World, a fantasy variant of the Earth, towards the new universe the game is set in - the Cosmos Arcane, with eight realms. Each of them covers one of the winds of magic.

The binder comes with separators for the individual chapters which are:

  • Read (Age of Sigmar, Mortal Realms, Order, Destruction, Armies, Handbooks and Stories)
  • Collect (Realm, Travel, Battlefield, Armies of Order and Armies of Destruction)
  • Build
  • Paint
  • and Play (Tutorials, Basic Rules, Battleplans and Warscrolls)

along with further sub chapters for each chapter. You can match these from the table of contents of each issue and split them. Ander after these first few issues, you're already have a solid stack of pages to read and browse through.

We have updated the overview on the Stormbringer issues released so far. In case you want to look back on the initial three issues, you can find that article here. The next articles will be once shipment #3 will arrive (probably somewhere in early April) and that one will cover the issues 08 to 13, with further units for both sides.

And while you're reading this, the base decoration on the two Warcry warbands build from the content of this magazine is being done, so expect some progress on them soon.
