Age of Sigmar Skirmish: Da Hotpawz – Part 1

Among hobbyists, it has become a bit of a tradition to spoof the name of the eighth month of the Roman calendar with the word "orc". A habit that has also been taken over by the industry giant Games Workshop, which leads to increased painting activity in many forums among the friends of the greenskins. Looking through my own shelf, I noticed that I had stacked up a lot of those models myself, which were still waiting for a paintjob. Since I really love the skirmish expansion, I have decided to organize some of my models into several little warbands.

In addition, the Warhammer 40,000 kill team is currently running very well, and if you take a look at some YouTube videos, it seems to be so narrative that it reminds many players of the old Mortheim in style. It may only be a guess, but I could see a game like this also appear for Age of Sigmar in the upcoming future.

Okay, a new project - so far, so good. Now it is time to get around the usual pitfalls and one of them is that you are often making plans too big and that too fast. So to keep track and motivation, I decided to draw the line at a maximum of 50 renown. This has the advantage that there is always an end in sight and on the other hand, that I can divide the structure into smaller, more pleasing chunks. In the first block I will lay the foundation for the warband and its story with 30 renown:

  • (24) Savage Big Boss Grukk
  • (2) Morrboy Boss
  • (2) Morrboy
  • (1) Gitmob Grot Boss
  • (1) Gitmob Grot with spear and shield

Even at the time of the seventh edition, I always wanted to put a "wild WAAAGH!" on the table, but the sheer amount of models simply put me off. In AoS skirmish I can comfortably pack everything in that I wanted without making it a Herculean task. I started out with an ordinary Bonesplitter.

Blood Bowl – Skycastle Titans Part 3

It's been a while since I introduced and updated the Skycastle Titans team, but I mentioned that actually only one model was left to paint. Now the last Skaven of the team is finally finished the project is completed.

Blood Bowl - Skycastle Titans

Hard to believe. I started with the team in September 2013 as an Ogerteam and after almost five years(!) I finally ended up with an Underworld team. I think the most exciting thing was basically the journey to this point, because I did not only get to know a lot of nice folks in the hobby and at the gaming table during this time, but I finally fulfilled my goal of having a team with blue as the main color. Although the color scheme is rather unusual for Skaven, I am pleased with the overall result. Also, the decision to accommodate a purple troll has paid off visually.

Warhammer Underworlds: Nightvault

In Summer I've already covered with Shadespire the initial start of the Warhammer Underworlds series, now in autumn the next wave for Nightvault is released.

Games Workshop - Warhammer Underworlds Nightvault Games Workshop - Warhammer Underworlds Nightvault

With the release of the Nightvault starter box, the competitive board game goes into its second season. The content is similar to the previous starter box, you receive two warbands, rules, tokens, dice, cards and two boards with hex fields, for 50 EUR. The game is fast paced, so you can play a match in 30-45 minutes and competitive matches are usually decided by the best out of 3 matches in a row. The included warbands come as usual for the Underworlds range in pre-coloured plastic and are push-fit (so you do not need glue to assemble the miniatures). All in all, a self-containing set, focused on competitive players and newcomers to the miniature (board) game hobby alike.

Fling on some paint on those halflings

Last year I got myself a box of the classic 3rd edition Blood Bowl Halflings. And this Saturday it was time to put some paint on these stunty guys.

Daniel dropped by for a painting session and tutoring, and Florian joined via Skype video chat. You should think about doing so, it is fun and easy to set up, as almost every mobile device or notebook nowadays has a webcam.

I went with a solid white primer instead of the black primer with white dusting I usually do, as I was told for the bright colours I'm going to use, it is the better foundation. So Army Painter Matt White as a primer (please note that GW Corax White Spray isn't white like the old Skull White, but a very light grey). The method to do the Halfling skin was given to me by Daniel, it was;

Blood Bowl Team Nurgle Rotters

The latest team kit for Blood Bowl, the Nurgle Rotters, was introduced at Warhammer Fest Europe and up for pre-order shortly after. Today I want to cover this Nurgle devoted team in this review.

Blood Bowl - Nurgle Rotters Blood Bowl - Nurgle Rotters

The boxed set is 25 EUR and covers two identical plastic sprues, 12 round bases (with a diameter of 32mm, slot and hole), an assembly instruction and large decal sheet with numbers, Nurgle iconography and positions in black and white. The instructions cover a pre-assorted roster for a 1.000.000 coins Blood Bowl team in English, French and German.

Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire – The Farstriders

The last of the warband supplements for Warhammer Underworlds Season 1 Shadespire in a review will be the Farstriders. We had Magore's Fiends early this week. Similar as the Fiends picked up the Khorne theme from the starter kit, the Farstriders pick up with the Stormcast Eternals from the same set.

Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire – The Farstriders Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire – The Farstriders

The Farstriders are the first warband to actually cover shooting / ranged combat in Warhammer Underworlds. But they won't be the last to do so, for sure. Actually as the Farstriders are Vanguard-Hunters, the next Stormcasts that are part of the Season 2 starter set Nightvault will introduce Evocators as a warband and magic as a new component.

But let us take a look what the Vanguard-Hunters around Hunter-Prime Sanson Farstrider bring to the table. As a highly trained, elite group of warriors, it is no surprise that they are only three men strong. Priced at the usual 22.50 EUR for an Underworlds warband supplement or 20.00 EUR for the easy-to-build box without the cards. The Underworlds box covers two pre-coloured bright blue sprues, a deck of cards and an assembly leaflet.

Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire – Magore’s Fiends

The last duo of the Shadespire warbands I'll cover will be Magore's Fiends and the Farstriders, beginning in today's review with the Fiends. These kits stay with the factions that introduced the first season of Warhammer Underworlds, Stormcast and Khorne followers.

Magore's Fiends are a warband with 4 miniatures, three Blood Warriors and a Flesh Hound of Khorne. The warband supplement from the first season Shadespire costs 22.50 EUR incl. the Underworlds content or 20.00 EUR as an Easy-to-Build kit. This box covers two blood-red pre-coloured sprues, a card deck and brief instructions on the assembly.

Warhammer Fest Europe 2018 – Part 2

Continuing with the coverage of Part 1 on Warhammer Fest Europe 2018, the main venue was a two story hall with a large store, covering products of the main range along with Black Library, Forge World and Warhammer World exclusives. The glass cabinets of the Golden Demon painting competition started to fill up slowly.

Warhammer Fest Europe 2018 – Part 1

This weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, was the first time for Warhammer Fest Europe to open. It is a new event following in the steps of the former Games Days. Games Days in Germany were held in Cologne at the Gürzenich and the new event uses the convention area of the Maritim Hotel Düsseldorf, right next to the Düsseldorf Airport (DUS).

Parking was not a logistical problem, as there were plenty parking lots around the Hotel and the airport area. At rates of 3,50 EUR per hour they weren't exactly cheap. But the airport brought for those who didn't travel by car a couple of benefits. The visitors were quite international, so they had an easy way to get there by plane from the UK, France, Italy or Spain (and from what our readers told me, even Australia!), and for the "locals" of North Rhine Westphalia, the state has superb local service by train and bus.

Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire – Spiteclaw’s Swarm

The matching counterparts to the Duardins of The Chosen Axes are the Skaven of Spiteclaw's Swarm. The Skaven, almost human sized rat-men, are one of the few (if not the only) faction that kept their name during The End Times and the introduction of Age of Sigmar. As the "existence" of these giant rats is still argued about in the lore (in the records of the human realms the sights of Skaven is continouisly dismissed and the people who saw them simply labelled as insane), they live in the ground, in dens and caves, and sometimes these large underground settlements cross the cities, deep in the mountains of the dwarfs / Duardin, making the two a fitting bundle for this release of Shadespire.

Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire – Spiteclaw's Swarm Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire – Spiteclaw's Swarm

The warband expansion of Spiteclaw's Swarm consists of 4 Skaven clan rats and Skritch Spiteclaw himself. It is set at a price tag of 22.50 EUR and contains two pre-coloured sprues in brown, a card deck and brief instructions on the assembly.

The card deck covers 65 cards, 5 cards for the warband itself, 29 are unique cards for the Orruk warband and 31 universal cards (split across objectives, upgrades and ploys) to be used with any Warhammer Underworlds warband.
