Realm of Chaos – Hooves and Fur

For the Realm of Chaos I sorted the miniatures into god-specific warbands. One for each of the four dark gods, covering the chaos champions with the according mark of chaos. But what about the undivided chaos? I thought the Beastmen would be a perfect fit.

For the models themself, I went with the middlehammer sculpts, so these are a bit younger compared to the chaos warriors and were released in the mid 90s, for the 4th edition of Warhammer Fantasy. As I wanted to go with round bases, I needed to stock up on the larger sizes. I mostly have 25mm rounds, but depending on the units I want them to mix a bit. Games Workshop came around with a "new" 32mm base size, that I already put to use with the Chaos Terminators of my 2nd Edition 40k project, and I have some of these around as well.

So for the regular grunts, we have the Ungors, the Gors and Bestigors. This seperation came just with the 5th edition of Warhammer Fantasy, before then you just had beastmen (later called gors), with the exception of chaos god specific beastmen, like pestigors.

  • 1 Beast Lord
  • 2 Beastman Champions
  • 1 Beastman Shaman
  • 2 Beastman Bestigors
  • 5 Beastman Gors incl. Musician/Hornblower and Banner
  • 4 Beastman Ungors
  • 1 Minotaur

The scope of the warband is complete, I have some further minotaur miniatures (with two-handed weapons) but I think I'll keep it at a single one. Similar with the bestigors, three would be a bit much, especially, as I already have three champions and a shaman, so the regular gors and ungors are quite good to fill the ranks. A duo of bestigors will be sufficient.

Dino got me to join in on the summer project on TabletopWelt, where I'd need to paint 18 miniatures up in 3 months. As the warband is "just" 16 miniatures, I thought about the side board and beastmen that won't be part of the beastmen warband, but will be with the entourage of the Khorne and Nurgle warband. The bestigor standard bearer with carry an icon of the blood god, and the ungors will receive some green stuff love to better fit the circus of Nurgle.

So this is the setup. I need a proper name for this warband, currently it runs under Hooves and Fur, but that has to change. I'll do a deep dive into the army book, among the dark tongue and such to see what would fit among the lines of Gorthor, Khazrak and Morghur. Especially as I don't just want names for the Beastlord but the other characters / miniatures as well.
