And I am back!

We began the new year with a brief vacation in England, with trips to London and Nottingham.

Spent the majority of the time in London, going for a city tour. We had our daughter with us, so this was a family trip and not a guys tour as some of the other journeys I have covered here. Therefore content and focus was a bit different, but I'll come to that later.

While in London, we went for some of the must-haves, parks and squares, that would be accessable with a stroller. While near Hyde Park I came across the Animals in War Memorial, and had to think of of the Man with the Donkey in Wellington, NZ at the National War Memorial. Of course, with my latest interest in the age of sail, and Black Seas, a visit to Trafalgar Square was out of question. And you know about my gusto for burgers, so having the chance to drop by one of the very few Shake Shacks outside of the United States, I just had to.

The Old World – Goblin Wolfriders

Warhammer - The Old World

Goblins have always had a somewhat unusual stand at Warhammer Fantasy, and with the announcement of the ominous Old World system we'll be revisiting some of these green fellows from times long past. To be exact, from the year 2002, because in that December a Goblin wolfrider army by Dan Tunbridge could be admired in White Dwarf 276 (issue #275 in the US), which was enough inspiration for me to add some goblins to my then Warhammer Fantasy army.

Venison Ragout, Pretzel Snacks and Loaded French Toast

As promised, I had the time to do some cooking and want to share the recipes with you. We have pretzel snacks, venison ragout (or deer stew) and loaded french toast.

Often with the holidays, there is too much food and you end up with quite some left-overs and other items, that were supposed to be prepared / eaten in that time, and now go stale or perish.

Merry Christmas 2019

The year is coming to an end and today, as well as the upcoming days will be celebrated with the family. And I hope that you can take a break and enjoy a few days with your family and friends - so Merry Christmas! Frohe Weihnachen or Feliz Navidad!

Chaosbunker Christmas

To prepare myself and gather a bit of rest for the upcoming days, I got back to the Lego 42098 Car Transporter, that I got myself for my birthday. I intended to do a MOC on this one, but as I didn't found a proper alternative build and due to the fact that my bricklink order got rejected by the german customs (yes, let that sink in, the original plastic parts sent by a shop from Norway weren't EU-compliant ...), I went with the regular A-model.

Christmas Weekender 2019

It's December 2019, only 4 weeks 'til christmas and the year is nearly over. So what's cooking in the remaining weeks until 2020?

Of course the project of Abaddon's Black Legion will continue, as it is the most compact of the Oldhammer / Midhammer / Retroprojects and therefore should be the easiest to finish.

Pizza Rolls, Lego Trucks and the Weekend

Long time, no cooking on here. But a chance to fix that! To take care of my colleagues in the office on my birthday, I made some pizza rolls as Finger food.

Pizza Rolls

You can make your own ingredients or buy one of the pizza kits (those where the dough and sauce is included). I pre-mix the filling, and believe me, you need less amount than you would expect. You get along with with around half or 2/3rd of the tomato sauce, get a good hand full of shredded cheese and thinly sliced pepperoni in there and mix thoroughly.

Terrain, Travel and Birthdays!

I am currently working on a couple of terrain pieces, that will follow my Warcry review. Among them is the Sigmarite Dais and the Azyrite Townscape, that will go great with the terrain from the Warcry starter kit.

I started with the Sigmarite Dais, a round temple base, that I primed black and gave a coat of grey paint. I added details and several coats of drybrush, beginning with AP Uniform Grey, Skeleton Bone and Weapon Bronce for the metal parts, that got washed with Badab Black.

Painting tricks for optical effects

In the last article I talked about how my painterly aspirations first developed in such a way that I wanted to reach a pro level. However, this was rather the beginning of my journey as a hobbyist and my preference has shifted a lot in the meantime.

One thought was pivotal at that point: How do I perceive the models when I first see them? In my youth I was strongly influenced by the painting style you could see on the packaging, in rule books, or at that time in the White Dwarfs - most hobbyists call this `Eavy Metal style, after the studio team that painted the models for Games Workshop. I realized that I wasn't really striving for the hyper-realistic style often seen at painting competitions, but rather the `Eavy style, because the models had met my eye in this way and my mind automatically judged whether I liked or didn't like them.

Painting tricks for optical effects

This cartoon-like style is basically quite easy to achieve as long as you learn some brush control. The basic principle remains the same, even with high class paintwork: A midtone, or "the basic color" is chosen. This is shaded and then highlighted with distinctive accents in the more edgy areas.

Food, movies and bases!

So I am back since the middle of the week. Been busy, taking a lot of pictures, as you can see below. Build a couple of kits, among them three Knight kits for Adeptus Titanicus.

And the July 2019 issue of White Dwarf arrived, along with a new promo card for Warhammer 40.000 Munchkin. Remember that I have some spare promo cards and book marks and you have the chance to get them, just by asking me for them at a convention or show.

A couple of interesting articles in there, for example I really did enjoy the new colour scheme they showed for the Astra Militarum / Imperial Guard, along with this beautiful Kill Team by Maxime Pastourel (also known as Mörback from Les Kouzes and I've shown his stunning Nurgle Army from Warhammer Fest here). There is a new game mode for Underworlds, have to give it a try.
