Asgard Aschaffenburg TableTopia 2019

Yesterday I visited the two day event of TableTopia by Asgard Aschaffenburg, a wargaming club from Northern Bavaria / Frankonia. The event is hosted in the youth centre of the Schweinheim district. The building has no parking lot of its own, but you can park you car along the street. And as you can see, the date of july 6th and 7th has gloriously sunny weather.

Google Maps didn't know about the actual location of house number 6 and gave me the adress of the waterways construction authority's backyard (as I've been to shows on military bases or other official buildings, that didn't put me off). The cars navigation just lead me to the part of the street (not recognizing the number either), but the building and its property was closed, as it was a weekend. The actual address is just on the other side of the road and easy to find due to the role ups in front of the youth centre and people carrying army bases into the building. So I parked the car, bought a ticket for saturday at 3 EUR (sunday is free of charge) and was handed a voting bill for Best of Show.

The youth centre has multiple rooms that were used for gaming and even covers a kitchen, so snacks and drinks could be offered to the guests as well. In the weights room was a painting table set up and the equipment hidden behind a large (and I mean large!) banner of the club.

The outside area was prepared with pavilions to protect from the sun and they set up a barbeque for lunch, covering burgers and pulled chicken.

TableTopia covers multiple participation rounds and a few traders. Settings and offered ranges were broadly mixed, from historic to fictional settings. Sunday will be heavier on the board games.

On of the first tables that caught my eye was this Peninsular War skirmish table by Tabletop Club Rhein Main, using the Horse & Musket ruleset, based upon the western skirmish Fistful of Lead. I like the spanish / mediterranean buildings, as they can be used from the crusades until world war two or spanish civil war.

Another table hosted by Tabletop Rhein-Main was Zigor's personal Lion Rampant setup, with the scenario that we have already seen at the Multiversum and CONflict. The recreation of a local conflict, where a lower noble captured the bakers to force the other cities / townships into submission.

A real eye catcher and my personal guess for the Best of Show award is this huge set up for Freebooters Fate. The modular table covers multiple often played areas all in one, with a harbour city, shore, a huge ship and even a hidden cave.

And just announced a couple of days ago in their newsletter, the new MDF buildings for Freebooter could be seen near the table. They were developed in cooperation with Micro Art Studio and are 17,50 EUR each.

In one of the side rooms Dead Man's Hand was played, using the impressive 4Ground western buildings along with some of the Stronghold Terrain collectors miniatures.

And of course the Fallout table was displayed as well, with whom Asgard already won a couple of nomination and prices for best of show.

I was able to get what I came for, the three event miniatures from 2017, 2018 and the current 2019 one. All of them covering the mascot in different poses, the 2017 miniature was even sculpted by Werner Klocke himself. In addition I got myself two of the club dice, which is a common habit among travelling players, and a couple of stickers.

I often enthuse about how easy it is to reach certain locations from the chaosbunker. And once again today was such a day. 1h 10m to the convention, 130 km of which more than 90% was one and the same Autobahn. I was a bit surprised that it went as smooth as it did. The holidays began on friday in some of the German states, and I expected more cars on the road. But beside a few Belgians and Dutch, along with the ocassional bike trailer, not much of holiday traffic.

The youth centre in Aschaffenburg reminds me a bit of the venue of the Bitbox in Mülheim, and is a very well fitting venue for a show of this size. Similar to Conflict two weeks ago, quite the family show, lots of known faces, that you might know from events in Palatine or the Rhein-Main-Area. Had a lot of good talks, it was interesting to have a chat for example on the individual and local experiences with Contrast, upcoming shows and current projects. I enjoy the direct chat with other hobbyists at such events, as it different to the discussions you have on boards or on facebook.

The event is well organized, the prices for the catering are fair and you could easily combine the trip with a day / weekend off with your family and spend the remaining day in the old town or exploring the further Frankonian area. It is very likely that I'll be around next year, but as mentioned yesterday, I'm going to take a break from the roadtrips to shows until fall this year, when Crisis is on schedule. I might squeeze the local warhammer store anniversary in there, but as that is 500m from my work place, you can barely call that travel effort.

Were you there yourself? What did you enjoy and which games did you give a try?
