Journey of the Maulers: Forever Gabru
After I started to play my Wanderleague parallely to painting the remaining players, the presentation mode has also changed slightly. Besides the introduction of a new player I will also try to give some game summaries, give an update about the season and add some snapshots.
But first the next player: Gabru Kneebreaka is, as the name suggests, from the fanclub of da Kneebreakaz. The idea for it came before I even painted the fans. This Blitzer is a homage, a small thank you to all the faithful readers, who follow the project now already in the 15th article.
Journey of the Maulers: Blackorcs
Blackorcs are always a tricky one for me, because according to the fluff they have noticeably darker skin than other orcs. For the fans I painted one by using the same colors as in the tutorial for ordinary orcs, but this was a very, very time-consuming method and I was looking for a recipe that would allow me to keep the comic-like look and still achieve a visually appealing result. Meanwhile I think I found my recipe for it, as I also found a good base color in the Vallejo Game Color range: Dark Green. Dark Green is a little brighter than the classic Dark Angels Green by Games Workshop and can be highlighted relatively well with Bonewhite or shaded with a black wash.
Steam and October White Dwarf
On Friday the current issue (October 2019) of White Dwarf arrived, Warhammer Community already gave it a brief preview on the content. As I have the subscription issue, I have a slightly different cover. This one has a complete cover showing the artwork of the Wrath and Rapture boxed set, that was released last december.
Warhammer Underworlds: Beastgrave – The Grymwatch
The first of the warband supplements for Beastgrave, the third season of Warhammer Underworlds is a Flesh-Eater Court warband, the Grymwatch.
The Grymwatch is an undead warband supplement for Warhammer Underworlds and costs 25.00 EUR. So these got a small price increase from the former 22.50 RRP price tag. There are 6 ghouls and a bat swarm in this warband, spread across two grey-green sprues, along with a card deck and assembly instructions. The former warbands were available as easy-to-build kits without the Underworlds content, the Grymwatch isn't offered in that way (yet).
Warhammer Underworlds: Beastgrave Primal Lair
In Nightvault Games Workshop introduced for the first time terrain accessories with the Arcane Hazards for the Underworlds series, and in Beastgrave we see that idea continued with the Primal Lair.
The Primal Lair is a set of six terrain pieces, to cover hexes on your Underworlds gameboard or to use on a regular tabletop wargame battlefield. It is kept in the design of stalagmites in hex-shape, along with bones and multiple things we've seen in the caverns.
Warhammer Underworlds: Beastgrave
The Warhammer Underworlds series starts into its third season with Beastgrave.
After the initial Shadespire and second edition Nightvault, the conflict moves into the bestial realm of Ghur, and gets lost in the Beastgrave. A huge mountain, laced with caverns and tunnels, which are filled with treasure and secrets, luring the warbands into its depth. As usual for the starter set it contains two warbands, the current rules, dice, cards and two hex field boards. The new Beastgrave boxed set got a new price tag and costs 60 EUR instead of the 50 EUR the other two sets cost.
Lords of WarCry – Da Redfists, Part 5
It is possible to make an Orruk with two bashas from the sprue of the Ardboys. I must confess, the clubs have such a wonderfully dull and brutal appearance that I really wanted to have an orruk with two of them. I also like the look of the faces of the Ironjaw Brutes and I think that an army always looks like it belongs together when it has a common recognition value like the facial features and heads.
Lords of WarCry – Da Redfists, Part 4
The nice thing about building up a warband is that you have the opportunity to try something new every now and then. With the fourth member of the Redfists I implemented something that I always wanted to try out: I painted Vorlug in a half-sided pattern. Depending on which side you look at the model from, it looks as if it has either a predominantly red armor or a predominantly black one.
Aeronautica Imperialis – Wings of Vengeance
Keen eyes have spotted the Logo of Aeronautica Imperialis in one of the teasers by Games Workshop published on Warhammer Community. This Saturday the new Wings of Vengeance starter kit for the updated 2019 version of Aeronautica Imperialis was released.
Updated? Yes. Aeronautica Imperialis is not a novelty as you might think and not a Specialist Games revival either. The game was developed by Forge World back in 2006, written by Warwick Kinrade, who went on to write historical rules nowadays (among other publications, the Battlegroup series and the first Armies of Germany supplement for Bolt Action). Forge World was heavily focused on heavy and super heavy gear for the Warhammer 40k range back in the day, especially for the Imperial Guard, as many of the team back then, came from a model building background and brought in a lot of experience and knowledge from the tank design into those resin kits. But they didn't just do tracked vehicles, but aircrafts as well. Playing dogfights with thunderbolts and marauder bombers in 28mm would be or is incredible fun, but you would need a gym (and deep pockets to buy a squadron of Forge World aeroplanes) to run such a game. So scaling that down to 6mm (the common epic scale within 40k until the release of Adeptus Titanicus), would make sense.
Lords of WarCry – Da Redfists, Part 3
The younger plastic Ardboys have the tendency to have very large surfaces of armor, which can lead to the Space Marine effect. The Space Marine effect? This is the kind of boredom you get when you paint the same color on large areas for a long time. Although the new Ardboys also have many smaller details, such as pelts or protruding leather shreds, the armour retains its somewhat bare plate look. So it takes some time to get to the point where you add a little more variety to them, such as a flame pattern, a few glyphs, spikes and the like.
Izgrod
A big mouth and the choppas to back him up, that`s Izgrod. He`s been with the Redfists for a while now and has seen numerous battles. Time has made him posey and the other Redfists rather dislike him for that. Usually Gotmork would`ve just killed the lesser disciplined Orruks, though at the moment Izgrod is too valuable to do so. But as the Redfists numbers will start to grow, his position, and his life, might not be that safe in the future...
