January 2024 review

So that was January. Mixed weather, mixed health, put a check on it and continue.

We didn't do a Kick Off on the blog like last year, basically because I didn't have the time to come around to it. The month began busy with the very late arrival of The Old World (thanks to Brexit, the french distribution hub and UPS - woohoo). And in addition to be rushed, there is little satisfaction when the items you covered aren't even available. And that has unfortunately happened a few times now.

Anyhow, I prepared a few things for painting. Mostly small stuff, like Warmaster heroes to see what speaks to me the most, and a few Solar Auxilia for Legions Imperialis.

Warhammer 40,000 – Deathwing Assault

The 1st Legion returns with their updated 1st company, the Deathwing Terminators under the command of Belial. While we already had a rather Deathwing heavy boxed set last year with Wrath of the Soul Forge King, bringing a lot of the 2013s Dark Angels Terminator sprues into circulation once again - only to be completely out of scale with the release of the new Terminator models of Leviathan - now the updated and upscaled Deathwing Knights are part of the Deathwing Assault, which we're going to take a look into today.

Deathwing Assault is a themed army boxed set, covering a battle force of Dark Angels (or its successor chapters) 1st company Terminators, including Belial as a character and the current rules, covering the Codex Supplement and Data Cards for the Dark Angels as well.

SzenarioCon 2024

My first visit to SzenarioCon in Hackenheim was just a year ago and yet the event has managed to become one of my favorites in a very short time. The reason for this is obvious, the range of gaming tables is very extensive and the gaming clubs really go out of their way to offer something special. Together with Jens, the head honcho of Chefoberboss, I visited Szenario again this year and would like to share my experience a few of the tables that were on display at the con. For a general look and a few more nice impressions, you can also take a look at Jens' YouTube video or directly go to the Szenario Facebook page.

We were there quite early and so I managed to take a snapshot in good time, when the hall wasn't filled to the brim. The number of registered guests and latecomers was between 250 and 300 people.

SzenarioCon 2024 Hackenheim

You can already see here that the many panels only allow a little more space for further exhibits. However, as the con has grown very steadily and, above all, successfully, an additional hall will be opened for exhibits next year.

Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team – Salvation

With Salvation the next season of Kill Team starts, leaving Gallowdark behind and opening up something new. And with the new season, a few things have changed. The big boxes were split, so you have now a separate Killzone: Bheta-Decima box with the terrain features, and in this case the Salvation boxed set for the two Kill Teams, in this case Space Marine Scouts and Aeldari Striking Scorpions, as the new season focuses more on spec ops and infiltration.

None of the boxes are stand-alones, you will still need the Core Rulebook to play. The lite rules are free to download on Warhammer Community. Anyhow, today we're just looking at the Salvation boxed set.

Legions Imperialis – Adding a Legio, Knight House or Auxilia to your Traitor Legion

And of course, we have to complete the list of all 18 Legiones Astartes by adding those who pledged their allegiance with the Warmaster Horus. And they wouldn't fight alone, not only with other traitor Astartes, but other parts of the former Imperial warmachine.

Warhammer The Horus Heresy - Legions Imperialis

The listing is a point to begin with, based upon my research in the wikis and Horus Heresy community. The list of allies will probably grow over the product schedule and campaign supplements for Legions Imperialis. While in case of the Collegia Titanica, the Legio Mortis fought along side every Traitor legion of the Astartes, and the only known titan legions who fought alongside the Night Lords, other flexible options are the Legio Fureans and Legio Krytos, who fought with every traitor legion with the exception of Konrad Curzes troops. Further more the support of Traitor Solar Auxilia, Renegade Militias and the Dark Mechanicum was not infrequently.

Legions Imperialis – Adding a Legio, Knight House or Auxilia to your Loyalist Legion

In Legion Imperialis you have the opportunity to use combined forces, so not just Astartes but field them with support of Knight Households, Titan Legios and Imperial Militias or Auxilia regiments. But which Legiones Astartes fought alongside which of those and what would create a proper alliance according to the lore?

Warhammer The Horus Heresy - Legions Imperialis

Of course, you can do what you want, it is your hobby, but with the Horus Heresy community known for being fluff bunnies, this is something I wanted to share with you, based upon lists from the fan wikis and combined work by people like David from Cat Hair in the Paint Pot.

I merged the lists and linked the according information from the wikis, so you have it at hand by looking up your Legiones Astartes. Beginning with the Loyalists. With the exception of the Raven Guard, every loyalist legion fought at one point along side the Legio Gryphonicus (War Griffons) and each of them can use the Solar Auxilia without any doubt.

Horus Heresy - Dark Angels

The 1st Legion, the Dark Angels from Caliban, already have the opportunity to bring their troops in Black, Green or White, but are able to field an even broader variety with the following affiliated factions.

Super Heroes on the Tabletop

It's christmas time and Marvel's What If returns tomorrow for season two! And wouldn't that be a great time to take a look what options wargamers have to bring super heroes to the tabletop?

Marvel - What If

With the Marvel IP, there are two very obvious choices, Marvel Crisis Protocol and in addition, due to S01E05 What if - Zombies? (yet the comic book series Marvel Zombies was already published in 2005) the Zombicide Spin-Off Marvel Zombies!

GrimDarkTerrain – Imperial Palace Ruins

What a journey GrimDarkTerrain has taken. Back in 2019 I stumbled upon an instagram post, and now 4 years later there is a full range of STL files to choose from. The entire range was designed with Adeptus Titanicus in mind, and we had multiple buildings in use during our Battle for Uulda campaign weekend.

But with the release of Legions Imperialis, the releases of September, October and December 2023 are very interesting and deserve a closer look. Especially after we pointed out, what we need for a start.

GrimDarkTerrain - Imperial Palace Ruins GrimDarkTerrain - Imperial Palace Ruins GrimDarkTerrain - Imperial Palace Ruins

GrimDarkTerrain has various ranges, the Imperial Palace is really self explaining, with Aeolus for air fields, Ares for fortifications, Argos for bunkers and turrets, Mytelene for fortresses, Olympus Mons for Mechanicum terrain and Pyraeus for supply and infrastructure.
