Bolt Action SdKfz 251/7 Ausf. D Pionierwagen
A bit of a sneaky release by Warlord Games, with the Campaign Stalingrad book a new plastic kit came along - the Sd.Kfz 251/7 Ausf. D Pionierwagen.
There was a Pionierwagen kit available before, based upon the plastic Sd.Kfz. 251 Ausf. C with a few resin parts added, to create the /7 variant. In this case we have the 251/1 Ausf. D as a base with an additional plastic frame, as we've seen in the kit of the Flammpanzerwagen, Stummel or mortar carrier.
Bolt Action Campaign Stalingrad
The last Bolt Action supplement I've reviewed here was Korea and that was a spin-off, which covered for the first time a conflict outside of world war 2. So considering world war 2 books for Bolt Action, the latest one before that was Operation Overlord released in summer 2019, one more reason to see how Warlord Games covers one of the biggest battles of the second World War - Stalingrad.
So far, the only campaign book covering Stalingrad, yet in a brief way, as Ostfront from the first edition of Bolt Action. Campaign Road to Berlin covers the epoch two years after the Battle of Stalingrad. But this battle and the fighting around it, had such an impact on the war in the east that they absolutely deserve a supplement of its own and Warlord Games spreads that on a very solid 176 pages. This is upper region for the length of Bolt Action supplement, and it stays with the regular price band of 20 GBP or 30 USD. And as often with the Bolt Action / Osprey books, we had an early cover (right) and a changed final cover of the supplement (left), moving from a Soviet soldier in winter gear to a sailor.
Looking back on July 2020
As announced in the last weekend update, on my prolonged wargamer's dad weekend, I switched from weekly to monthly sum ups and this being the first monthly review, starting in July.
Speaking of wargaming dad, 2 years ago I enjoyed my parental leave, and what can I say, the curly little big adventure that made me a wargaming dad has grown quite a bit, and enjoys visiting me at my desk.
Realm of Chaos – Hooves and Fur Part XI
The third and final block of the summer project overs two Bestigors, a Minotaurus, the Beastmen Chieftain and two bonus Nurgle Ungors, that I already prepared in the last update of Hooves and Fur.
Realm of Chaos – Hooves and Fur Part X
I have finished the first and second block of Hooves and Fur, and now going for the third and final batch of beastmen.
As the scope of the warband was defined and set to 16 miniatures, I need two more to tackle the summer project challenge of 18 miniatures in 3 months. So set this project into perspective, the beastmen are the undivided part of my greater Realm of Chaos project, which covers a mixed warband for each of the four chaos gods. Mixed meaning, not only covering chaos warriors, but all kinds of servants of the dark gods. Unfortunately there are only a few proper banner men for the mortal chaos, so I had to be creative about this.
And I thought, that two ungors would be a good fit for the Nurgle warband, as a banner bearer and musician. But I couldn't keep them like this. So after preparing the miniatures, taking care of the mould lines and putting them on a base, I went on to prepare a conversion.
Realm of Chaos – Hooves and Fur Part IX
The bases are done, the shields glued to the ungor skirmishers - I can call block #2 for the summer project ready and done! Another 6 beastmen for the Hooves and Fur warband finished.
Realm of Chaos – Hooves and Fur Part VIII
Back on topic with Hooves and Fur. The wash has dried and so I can add the highlights and further shades and details on to the beastmen herd.
Aeronautica Imperialis – Taros Air War
Right along with the Skies of Fire starter box, came Taros Air War, the second campaign supplement for Aeronautica Imperialis.
The Taros Air War is part of the Taros Campaign, a conflict Forge World covered in one of their Imperial Armour books back in 2004, Imperial Armour Volume Three - The Taros Campaign, to be precise. Taros was mining world, in the Ultima Segmentum, in the service of the Imperium of Man. But the Planetary Governor Aulis, head of the Taros government, developed friendly trading relations with the Tau, and sought to defect to the Tau Empire with the support of much of the planetary population. A treachery the Imperium couldn't let go unpunished, and their response was relentless.
Aeronautica Imperialis – Skies of Fire
Games Workshop gave Aeronautica Imperialis an update with 2020, a new starter set, with Skies of Fire, covering the Imperial Navy against the T'au Empire.
Realm of Chaos – Hooves and Fur Part VII
After finishing block 1 of 6 regular beastmen incl. a champion, I can start with the second block for the summer project - a challenge of painting 18 miniatures in 3 months, in blocks of 6.
So for block 2 I went with 4 ungors and two characters, another champion and a shaman. If you're wondering for the rather random assortment and the round bases. I talked about that in the very first article about Hooves and Fur. These are not meant for Warhammer, but for some smaller skirmishes and thus I just need some named models and a few different types of warriors.
