Realm of Chaos – Hooves and Fur

For the Realm of Chaos I sorted the miniatures into god-specific warbands. One for each of the four dark gods, covering the chaos champions with the according mark of chaos. But what about the undivided chaos? I thought the Beastmen would be a perfect fit.

Weekend Update CW 23/2020

From one short week to the other, welcome to the weekend update.

Earlier this week, I got the info that Heresy Lab did ship out the special Mordheim miniature of Luthor Wulfenbaum. This miniature was produced for the occasion of 10.000 members in the Mordheim group, and everything was coordinated by Tuomas Pirinen.

Cruel Seas – Royal Airforce and Luftwaffe

While I'm currently reading the Close Quarters supplement for Cruel Seas, I return to the aircrafts that I have around for air support on the channel.

Revell Type VII C + Trumpeter Wildcats Trumpeter - Cruel Seas Flyers Trumpeter - Cruel Seas Flyers

Quite a while back I bought a few of the larger Trumpeter packs, as I thought an air combat game in topgun style would be fun, maybe to defend an aircraft carrier. From that idea I still have the F4F-4 Wildcat here, the other kits (Douglas TBD and SBD) I traded with the Sweetwater travelling box, as only the Grumman were used by the British under the designation Martlet / Wildcat Mk. IV. As it would be unfair to just give the Royal Navy some support from above, I got something for the Kriegsmarine as well.

A trip down memory lane … first time to Warhammer World

Easter Sunday, April 4th 1999, was the first time for me to be at Warhammer World. Visiting the museum and store at the "new" (back then it was) Games Workshop headquarter in Lenton, where they are located until today.

But how did I, a merely 15 year old lad from the west of Germany get to the British midlands? My father took us for a trip to England, doing some groundhopping in and around London, and was looking forward to pay a visit to Nottingham, a city that took to him, when he was there a few years earlier, for the UEFA quarter finals second leg with Bayern Munich against Nottingham Forest. And what a happy coincedence, that there was more to Nottingham than just football. Today it is the other way around, when I'm at Nottingham, I usually drop by the stadium City Ground and bring something back with me for him.

While cleaning up and taking stock of my collection, I stumbled upon the tickets for the museum from that day, and would like to take you with me to a trip down memory lane. There were two types of tickets, one for the gamers which cost a few pounds and the ones for the "squigherders" (that was at least the name, the tickets had at Games Days for the parental chaperon) that were free, for those who accompanied the juveniles.

Weekend Update CW 22/2020

Another prolonged weekend ahead. It's whitsun and that means a holiday on monday. Traditionally a weekend with a lots of festivals, like Rock am Ring, will be a lot less crowded.

As I am still re-sorting the bunker, this week was a bit slow on the articles, I covered the first of the re-shoots with the boba-fett style bountyhunter for Inq28, and Dino continues the Journey of the Maulers with an article on the fans.

I have built and painted this one in 2009, and decided it is time to new pictures. The bounty hunter "Boba" was created for the Inq28 project.

Cutting Matt Warlord Games - Gaming Matt Open Sea Hagen Miniatures - Black Seas & Cruel Seas Items

Working from home continues and my "office" is more of a studio than an office-in-home, so I work where I usually do my reviews and such. The notebook took a toll on the cutting mat and the exposure to the heat made it warp quite a bit. Therefore I replaced it with a new one and added a smaller A3 one on top. But will switch back on monday, when the regular work week continues.

And finally my Warlord order arrived, including my new open sea gaming mat, that I want to use with Cruel Seas and Black Seas. Along with the ships by Hagen Miniatures, I am looking forward to put the naval week(s) on here.

Splitting and updating social media

On the right column on the blog you see this button, to follow me on instagram.

chaosbunker - follow me on instagram

I dediced to split the wargaming content from my private account, dennismit2n, to cover wargaming in a more focused and pure way. Along with not drowning my family and friends with plastic toys. I already did take care of that on facebook a long time ago by using lists, so I only share those contents with people that have some connection with our wargaming hobby.

Oldhammer – Spotting and identifying Recasts

While you're looking for old miniatures on eBay and trading groups the risk of a recast is rather minimal, at least while looking for regular rank & file units in the one-digit value area. Some miniatures tend to be rare and very sought-after, creating prices for a single 28mm miniature of 30 EUR, 50 EUR or in some cases even beyond that on the second hand market. This demand and willingness to pay such prices, creates the interest of mischievous parties to cash in on this situation.

As I am doing the occassional coverage on Oldhammer projects, mostly 40k second edition so far, with a bit of Realm of Chaos, my personal risk is minimal. I bought a lot of the miniatures that are now valued either NIB or second hand from trusted sources. But when I added the Legion of the Damned to my Space Marine lot, of course I thought about Veteran Sergeant Centurius. The model was only available for a brief moment in / around 1996, for the opening of the 100th store in the UK. I am not sure about re-release in the US or Europe for similar events. But the miniature is rare and a real one, ideally NIB, easily sells for 50 to 70 EUR the right time. So I waited and watched the market space and eBay from time to time. I was a bit surprised that the prices dropped below 50 GBP.

Realm of Chaos – Sorting the warbands

While sorting out, what to sell and what to keep, I took a long deep look at my Realm of Chaos miniatures from the Oldhammer to early Midhammer era.

Realm of Chaos Realm of Chaos - Champions of Chaos Stripping Paint

To me, the core of these miniatures, especially the Champions of the different chaos gods, are like the crown jewels of my collection. But just keeping them for the sake of having them, would be a waste. Similar to a car, they are build to be driven, and as such are miniatures not to be kept in blisters, they should be painted and in some cases to be used in games. Why do these old miniatures fascinate me so much? I got into the topic of Oldhammer a few times in the past, once in 2016 when I had my 20th anniversary with the wargaming hobby, and another time a bit more focused on the 2nd Edition of Warhammer 40,000.
